Chronic cough: What helped you?

Posted by larry1443 @larry1443, Oct 1, 2024

I have suffered from a chronic cough for last 10 years or so. Comes and goes. Month on, month off. No connection to seasonal allergies. All the test for GERD, asthma. vest extras, different meds, cough syrups, sinus flushing, etc. Nothing works. Mainly when I go to bed a lye down (and just about asleep) and off and on during the day until it tapers off and goes away for a month or so. Then back again. Hard racking cough. Anyone ever experience this? Getting prostate radiation treatments and concerned I may suddenly cough (hard racking cough) during radiation treatment. Any help appreciated

I have a chronic cough with lpr reflux, dry mouth, and allergies. I am afraid of cognitive decline, so am really limiting sugar intake (even raw honey) and using items I have to swallow with sugar alcohols (I realize there is only a link between cognitive decline and sugar alcohols). So I am trying slippery elm lozenges that have little sugar and no sugar alcohols. It seems to be helping. I also use a nebulizer, especially before bed, swish warm salt water, and use a couple of non-alcoholic mouth rinses. I have weaned myself off off menthol. God bless all of you struggling.

I get you. Same story here except no deviated septum. I don’t avoid public places but I am very self conscious too, always explaining myself. Sometimes I just wear a mask. Eating out with people I am so sure they are annoyed but are trying to be understanding. We’re all looking for solutions to this multi factorial ailment and I have read that there is medication in the research pipeline for LPR which would be so magnificent. In the meantime trying to avoid stress and known triggers, and continually researching LPR is all I can come up with.
Empathizing with all of you chronic cough sufferers.

@wendymb~ Interesting thoughts Wendy. I too avoided large people gathering especially during COVID as I didn't want to frighten people, & I tired of explaining "it's not contagious, it's a chronic Post Nasal Drip that triggers my cough. " In spite of all the different MDs I have seen for this, & all the Nasal sprays & RX I have been offered & tried, the one thing I think that helps me most is Mucinex. which is over the counter to purchase. It doesn't clear it up, or make it go away, but it does buy me a few hours with out coughing constantly.
