Any tips from those who deal with hypomagnesemia?

Posted by avande @avande, 1 day ago

Are there any other 20 year olds who deal with hypomagnesia and CKD? I haven’t seen any posts of anybody who does at this age and feel so alone.

Any tips from those who deal with hypomagnesia? Ways to deal with infusion anxiety?

Hoping to get some answers since my levels won’t stabilize when I go to Mayo in a few weeks!!

@avande welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Is hypomagnesia low in magnesium? I’m not sure. About 21 years ago (I’m old) I had bouts of low calcium, magnesium and potassium after I had a pancreas transplant. I had to take supplements of these things for awhile. It is good that you have an appointment coming up soon at Mayo. They will take good care of you. Maybe some other members that have had similar experiences to you will join in soon with input.

@avande Let me add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect!

Here is an article from Cleveland Clinic that addresses the hypomagnesemia issue: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23264-hypomagnesemia

As you can see, there are several possible causes. What do you feel may be part of the reason for your situation? What will you be seen at Mayo Clinic for in a couple of weeks?

@cehunt57 yes it is low magnesium except normally either potassium and/or calcium levels are abnormal with low magnesium and my other levels look okay. Supplements/infusions unfortunately aren’t helping as much as they should be because of Chronic Kidney Disease but I’m glad that they helped you!

@gingerw My doctors and I have exhausted that list but I’ll be seen for the low magnesium and not having those levels increase despite supplementation/meds/infusions, except all of my other lab values look okay.

@avande So glad to hear you are visiting Mayo Clinic to have this concerning situation looked at. Please let us know what they say, okay?
