Constant upper abdominal pain

Posted by tj @tjanet, Jun 1 4:19pm

I have Short Bowel Syndrome. I am having constant abdominal pain above my belly button and to the left of my abdomen and I also have constant nausea. Doctors don't know how to treat my constant abdominal pain and constant nausea. Abdominal pain doesn't change with what I eat, doesn't change with bowel movements and doesn't change with moving around/walking etc. Resting doesn't change my constant abdominal pain and constant nausea.

Thanks for your insight. I was looking into doing a HIDA scan to assess the function of the gallbladder. I've done an MRCP with no contrast, and it was clear. I am just worried that if my pain is not flared up, then nothing will be shown in the scans.

@chx
I see your point.
HIDA scan also measures the gallbladder’s emptying rate.
Another option would be to check with your doctor if a test could be done when you have an attack.
Was an ultrasound done of the gallbladder?

@chx It sounds like Gall Bladder trouble.I had a similar pain in stomach that radiated to back before I got my Gall bladder removed 20 yrs ago.An ultrasound diagnosed it.

Welcome to Mayo Connect!
I recognize the pain that you are describing.
I get similar pain lasting about 8 hrs after eating certain foods. Mine is related to my bile ducts. I don’t have a gallbladder but the reaction feels like when my gallbladder was full of stones.
There could be tiny stones in the common bile duct. The pancreatic duct and bile duct enter the small intestine through the same opening - that why blockage of the common bile duct can cause blockage of the pancreatic duct, at times leading to pancreatitis.
The pain of either can be felt in the back.
There are specific tests that evaluate the gallbladder function. Do you think that you had any such test? The MRCP can also detect problems in the area where the two ducts enter the intestine.

@astaingegerdm 1 month on the Milk Thistle will unclog your bile ducks. This is not something i’ve read on clickbait. Go to any healthfood store & talk to them about it since they clean u out so well that if you are on blood pressure drugs you can’t take it

I’m aware of milk thistle’s reported positive actions in the liver. I used to give it to my dog. However, it would not be able to dissolve solid material in the bile ducts.

@chx Well at least the Ultrasound was clear but of course it does not solve your problem.Kidney problems can give back pain also.It seems difficult to find causes of inflammation.

I got my gallbladder removed a couple years ago. I still have constant upper abdominal pain and nausea. Had a MR enterography, CT enterography and a small bowel follow through tests done.
I have a ileus and my intestines muscles are weak. So trying to figure out how to get that treated.

@tjanet Would it be Bile Malabsorption I wonder. This can happen after Gall bladder removal.

@tjanet I don't know what it could be as you had so many tests and nothing showed up.The only other thing that I could think of would be diverticulitis or an ovarian cyst.both being on the left side.
