What are your healthy recipes for someone living with prostate cancer?

Posted by fmdsouthard @fmdsouthard, Jul 22 8:24pm

I am looking for recipes that would be great for my husbands prostate cancer return gleason 10. I know foods to eat and not eat, but I am looking for recipes to fix for him. THX

@mjp0512 Good for you! Life with prostate cancer sucks enough without having to beat yourself up that maybe YOU caused it by eating something!😖😖😖
And maybe you’ll “Bring it Back” If you eat meat, eggs, dairy and other foods you love…bunk!!!!
We’re all gonna die from something and trust me, I’ve heard and seen enough stories of people who survived ‘X’ only to die horribly from ‘Y’. It strikes me as nonsensical to think you have the power over your own life and death with a sprig of broccoli or a cup of soymilk! Talk about magical thinking🤯.
I had those quail eggs of yours poached over a frisee salad in France; the lumps of goat cheese contrasted nicely with the salty, crackly lardons. If that meal - and others like it - gave me cancer it was worth every wonderful mouthful😋😋😋
Phil
PS: I was going to send this to you privately, but decided to live dangerously…it’s my opinion, nothing more, and was encouraged by your refreshing frankness on this surprisingly controversial topic.
Best,
Phil

@heavyphil - Hey ya, Phil. I tend to take it to the opposite extreme when I chime in on these diet threads. Not quite sure why that is. I don't begrudge anyone who wants to find a way to minimize cancer risk but completely changing your diet to Mediterranean, or Hollywood, or whatever the flavor of the month is, isn't going to do it. IMO the biggest thing that gets lost in these discussions is moderation. If you're consuming contact cement to catch that little buzz, you should probably stop. Eating a tuna fillet, every now and then, is good for you, rich in Omega 3's and the like. Eating a tuna fillet every day will cause mercury build up in your system with all associated neurological side effects thereof. Most of us here already have cancer. Cutting out cheeseburgers isn't going to change that.

Cancer is hard enough without putting your system through drastic changes to your diet and eating things that you don't normally eat. Eat what you want, just do so responsibly.

Since I tend to rock the boat here, I think I'll try to stay out of these diet threads from now on. Well bye, time to feed the critters. Good to hear from you, Phil.

@mjp0512 Amen, brother!! Dr Zeke Emanuel just came out with a ‘longevity’ book called ‘Eat Your Ice Cream!’
It seems that the key to a long life is more than just eating ‘good’ and ‘healthy’ food.
Obsessing over your stringent dietary requirements (while cheerfully telling the world “But I LOVE eating organic cardboard!’) gets you nothing but misery.
As it turns out, eating full fat dairy ice cream with sugar LOWERS a person’s risk for diabetes and heart disease…and they don’t know why!
Perhaps the endorphin rush of that Butter Pecan or Mint Chip does the trick?🤔
This week’s New Yorker has an article about longevity as well - especially those Blue Zones where everyone lives well past age 100.
Turns out, much of it is total BS - most of these places suffered catastrophic events (war, earthquakes, etc) which wiped out census records.
When a new census was taken, many people falsified their ages for a variety of reasons or used the Japanese (or other local) calendars to mark their age.
Okinawans, the poster children for longevity, eat more KFC than anywhere in Japan, have the highest BMI and one third of the people smoke!
You are not the squeaky wheel on this forum by any means. I, too, find myself perplexed by people ( not just here on the forum, but in general) who think moderation isn’t enough.
They really believe that a silver bullet or some combo of ‘superfoods’🤭 and supplements is going to allow them to live cancer free into their 120’s…gimme a break!
BTW, that Quail Marsala looks delicious😋!

Some of us choose to follow science and doctor's advice and common sense and eat healthy because denying the fact that what we eat or drink has zero effect on our body is ludicrous, to say the least 😂

One can take responsibility for one's life choices or not - but one can not deny obvious and know facts, actually one does not even need science papers to know that eating junk, smoking, drinking etc, effects our body 100 % in many, many horrible ways.

Cancer or not - eating healthy is HEALTHY : ))). Whoever chooses to make excuses has full right to do that ; ), I personally ALWAYS choose to DO good 😇 and give people GOOD advice and A LOT of hope. Each to their own ...

Staying with the tortilla theme I started earlier, chicken fajitas are very easy and very healthy.

2-3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips
1 onion, cut into half-rings
1 lime, cut in half
3 bell peppers, sliced
3 TB avocado oil, divided
1-2 TB fajita seasoning (store-bought or homemade)

In a medium bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon of the oil, juice from 1/2 the lime, and the fajita seasoning. Add in the chicken and toss to combine. Set aside.

Heat a large nonstick skillet over med-hi heat. Toss in the chicken and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 7-9 minutes, until chicken is just cooked through. Remove from the skillet.

Heat the remaining oil in the skillet over med-hi, then in with the onions and peppers and a sprinkle of salt. Sauté, tossing occasionally for 5 minutes or so, then back in with the chicken, and cook another 3-5 minutes.

Squeeze the other half of the lime over the chicken mixture and serve with warmed whole wheat tortillas and low-fat sour cream and low-fat cheese.

@surftohealth88 See- right away you veer to junk food, smoking and heavy drinking…Never even mentioned those things because their negative health effects are well documented and obvious.
No one is ‘making excuses’ for eating ‘unhealthy’ whatever that means.
An occasional BigMac, slice of cheesy pizza or a creamy milkshake is NOT going to kill you or harm you in any way - in fact, it might put a smile on your face…OK, not your face, but mine…once again, moderation is key!
What is ludicrous is the idea that foods are the number one cause of cancer. The world is filled with millions of people who eat poorly - both nutritionally and calorically - and they never get cancer; some never even get sick.
Others follow strict dietary rules for ‘healthy’ eating and get the absolute worst kinds of cancer - oh, wait a minute!!- that must be from genetics, right?? It COULDN’T have been their diet! They ate ‘healthy’ foods only!
Reminds me of the old Woody Allen film ‘Sleeper’, where after being in a coma for 100 years, the awakened Woody is told that all his friends are dead. In horror and disbelief he shouts,
“How can that be?! They all ate Organic Brown Rice!!”🤣🤣

@turtbean - Thanks for this. Tried it last night with a few substitutions...

Chicken breast > Quail breast... well because there's no shortage of them here.
Avocado oil > EVOO ...I have enough different kinds of oil. Didn't need to buy another one.
Low fat cheese > shredded Mexican mix...I like my cheese to melt uniformly. Low fat doesn't.

They were excellent and what surprised me the most was the flavor of the whole wheat tortillas. I don't think I would eat them all the time, but they were a pleasant change of pace.

And...since I have some leftover sour cream, it's only right that I have a steak and baked potato tonight. 😁

@mjp0512 - you’re welcome! Good cooking is all about making substitutions that work for you in your own kitchen…quail fajitas sound very interesting. I think the closest I’ve ever come to quail was making roast pheasant for my in-laws after my FIL, and avid bird hunter, came back one Sunday afternoon with several. Even the dogs got some!

OK - now inventing things that were supposedly said like this one : "... the idea that foods are the number one cause of cancer" and you throwing out invented data that would hopefully stick to the wall is childish and the statement that "some" people have crappy diet and live to be a 100 is the mildly said silly. Yes, SOME people that eat junk do live to be 100 and SOME people that eat brown rice die of cancer, the key is in a word "some"- we can rationalize our bad choices till the end of days.

If a bad quality chain store bought pizza with stale ingredients puts smile to your face and you are aware that it is not the best choice and still want it - what can be done about it - nothing ! It is your body and your life ! But discouraging people who come with questions about HEALTHY food and calling them unreasonable is absolutely out of line and even malicious - you are discouraging people to behave in responsible and healthy way. How is that OK ?

I never make fun of people who eat junk I never attack them personally. I give advice based on studies and what doctors told me and what nutritionists say in every single book or publication and I do that when somebody ASKS me about that. People who started this thread ASKED about healthy diet - they did not ask "What is Phill's opinion about me wanting to eat healthy" ? Now, people eating healthy causes you to start behaving like a toddler who can not get his send toys back and is kicking sand at other kids. You have full right to eat what you wish - I do not remember me calling a "food police" on you LMAO and them raiding your cupboard. ??? BUT please let people eat healthy food in peace LMAO

I am not perfect , I have my vices, but I would NEVER tell other people that it is OK to do it, I would never tell my friend with a serious heart issue to "go for it" - are you kidding me ???

The original post was asking for recipes. It might be best to stay focused on the task at hand. I come here everyday to get information about PCa.....and I have learned alot. Thanks to Phil, Turt, Jeff and Mrs Surf and Mjp for all the good information and advice......we are all in this together. Now lets get back to the business at hand...supporting each other..... not bickering about beans, meat and noodles...... I hope everyone can move on from this conversation.....who needs anymore stress in their life right now? We have bigger fish to fry...lmao...
