HPV Tonsil Cancer: How do you manage the stigma?
I don't know about the rest of you, but where I live, I feel I'm the only one with HPV Tonsil Cancer. I'm sure some of the rest of you know exactly what I mean. This might sound like a Pity Party, but it's the truth. No one goes around talking about having cancer caused from a STD and nor do you want to tell anyone. Not only do we have to deal with the cancer aspect of this horrible ordeal, we have the stigma of having a sexual transmitted disease to boot. My best friend doesn't know about my cancer and we are very close. I have kept my surgery and radiation from him because he's been with only his wife his whole life. HPV cancer is not something he has to ever worry about. I just don't have the guts to tell him, or any other family members. I have told some friends at the gym because they see my throat scar and my weight loss. Although my throat scar was very well done. I tell them it was tonsil cancer but I leave off the HPV. They're not stupid people and so who am I kidding? Cancer is lonely and bad enough without adding the HPV aspect. If I could only do things over? At 62, we weren't told about HPV and now it's too late. My wife is now going to see if she's HPV positive. That's going to be interesting.
There's no mental support for most of us with HPV Cancer in our local areas. I'm grateful that we are going to live and it was caught in time. And most HPV cancer responds well to treatment. As all of you know, this journey isn't easy and in the early stages it robs you of some the most cherished pleasures of life. I'll end by saying that HPV Tonsil Cancer is a very lonely "Cross" to bear. I hope my Pity Party wasn't too long, if so, I apologize.

@woodsy1 My older sister criticised me when I got tonsil cancer. Something I did or ate or lifestyle must have caused this. Not like her, older, wiser, eats healthy, exercises regular. She complained because maybe her insurance rates would increase now that there is cancer in the family. What a mess I have caused.
Then she got cancer, lady parts cancer. She said it wasn't fair, she did everything right. I am still waiting for an apology which likely will never come.
My point is we cannot control what other people think or feel about a situation. And maybe others just don't have a need to know. In this forum we can talk as friends who have gone through something most people would not really understand because "you don't get it until you get it". To family and friends at home, I only talk about this to those who really care or are genuinely interested. Most are not. Most don't think about me as much as I think they should. Ha Ha.
Good health and healing.

@hrhwilliam That's a great story Bill, thank you for sharing it. I had to read that one out loud to my wife. She said very true.

1 ReactionI get it , I completely understand . My Squamous Cell carcinoma showed up from sexual activities I had in the 1970s . I am now 77 years old and struggling to live through the side effects from 35 radiation treatments, for the past year.
Your right I as well keep the STD s mention from friends.
Also , I am now being treated for liver cancer because of drug injections back in the seventies also . Too young and too stupid . Strange that it shows up now after all these years .
Last week I went to Roswell to have radiation beads inserted into the tumor on my liver .
My wife is a God send ! We have been married 50 years this past May .

2 Reactions85% of the world population is infected with the HPV virus.
Viruses contribute to 20% of cancers. People used to be ashamed of being diagnosed with cancer. Shame is bad for our overall health and well being and keeps us isolated. Give yourself the same compassion that you would likely give to someone in your situation.

6 ReactionsI don’t feel any stigma about HPV tonsil cancer that I have. I never thought of stigma once during the discovery and communication to others about this. This is a burden that you are carrying unnecessarily. Others have pointed out how prevalent HPV is. There is no stigma about this in my life and I encourage you to rethink how you feel about this and let it go. You are wonderful and sacred and don’t let your mind tell you otherwise.
