Managing Hip Bursitis Pain

Posted by donnajones @donnajones, Nov 14, 2024

I have what has been diagnosed as bursitis in my right hip for almost a year now-steroids will relieve for a brief period of time . I can’t sleep of a night because that is when the pain is the worst. The only non pharmaceutical relief I have gotten is sound wave therapy has anyone had this and tried something that worked. This is now even bothering me when I walk of a day.

Has anyone had their bursa sacs removed?

@laughlin1947 Thank you for your kindness.

I am already on a Protein Pump Inhibior (Protonix) for reflux and Pepcid AC at night. Mobic/Meloxicam hikes up my blood pressure. It helps with my pain, but causes reflux and
facial flushing.

If you can get into a Pain Clinic or even a Neurologist, they can write you a non narcotic
pain cream. I use one and it helps me greatly with Fibromyalgia & Arthritis since I can't
take NSAIDS.

Mine has Lidocaine, Gabapentin, Flexeril & Dicoflenac (Voltaren) in it at a low dose. It
has to be compounded in a compounding pharmacy. It helps take the edge of the pain
and make it more tolerable.

Blessings & Prayers to you & your wife......

@covidstinks2023 I read yesterday online where they said Voltaren was not effective for hip bursitis pain because it cannot penetrate deeply enough. I hate to see you pay a premium for a compounded lotion that is not well founded as to efficacy. Good luck to you! Sounds like the compounded lotion is working ok for you, nevertheless.

@laughlin1947 Thank you. I think its the other ingredients in with it that make it work better for me than the regular Voltaren Gel OTC.

I was misdiagnosed with hip bursitis. I actually needed my hips replaced! I'd suggest seeing a hip surgeon before going forward with any bursa surgery.

It would be an orthpedic surgeon doing the bursitis surgery, no? It's probably an arthroscopic procedure. IIRC I've been told I'm not a candidate for HR surgery. If it continues to get worse, I'd prefer something permanent and not some hour long band aid to apply everyday.

@bajjerfan some orthopedic spine surgeons stick to spines. I think that’s what meant. It helps to get a variety of surgeon opinions. I had 4 when it came to my lumbar spine. They were all very different! When I found my surgeon I had 100% trust I did not have with the others. I had a hip surgeon who had AMAZING reviews. Had 3 opinions there. My irritated bursa was with primary care docs.

I wasn't planning to see a spine surgeon. I have other issues similar to the pain of bursitis that is likely neither nerve related nor spine related. Did your primary care doc relieve your bursa sac pain?

@bajjerfan only temporarily with a steroid injection. They ran out after 5 years (3 years, then 1.5 years, then 6 months relief, then nothing). I needed my hip replaced! Then all bursa inflammation stopped! That's why I said I was misdiagnosed. My bursa problems were a result of my "gait" going out of whack because my hip "cushions" were deteriorating along with progressive arthritis (if I remember correctly). It doesn't take much to screw up your bursa sac as the mechanics of your hips are thrown out of whack! Try some shoe inserts and if you can ease the pain it points to your hip mechanics being the problem! (or your lumbar spine) or in my case BOTH! I had them all replaced between 2012 & 2018!

@loriesco

I was going to start wearing my AFO brace again to see if it would change my gait and if that would change anything painwise. Unfortunately I have a corn on my right foot which got painful quick. I'm seeing a podiatrist soon and hopefully she will remove it.

Question: Have you had an MRI of your hip? I was treated for bursitis for two years by the orthopedic surgeon who replaced my hip. It was the wrong diagnosis beginning 3 months after hip replacement. I actually live now w/ a gluteus medius full thickness tear with fatty infiltration and atrophy. It was a spine surgeon who recognized my Trendelenburg gate when I made an appt for his assessment. Yes, I'm eligible for a gluteus medius transfer and considering it. But's it is an iffy surgery w/ long term rehabilitation. Injections don't provide relief nor does PT. The hip pain comes and goes, but balance is an issue. Please search the Internet for gl tears to better understand this just might what is at issue for you, but an MRI will provide answers. I wish you well.
