Starting Tymlos..

I tend to overreact to meds and often get the side effects. I do better if I start with a baby dose and work my way up. What would be a good dose to start with? I will have the first dose in the doctor’s office. Do I understand correctly that this is done with how many clicks you give it?
I already have heart palpitations and take a beta blocker for that , starting half a year ago. I am thinking I can up the dose of the beta blocker if I get increased palpitations. Anyone else given a beta blocker to manage palpitations?
One last thing. My calcium level was abnormally high, despite my hyperthyroid numbers being normal. The Dr ordered additional tests to rule out some other things and I haven’t heard back yet. Has anyone else had high calcium without being on a med that caused it? I can’t start the Tymlos till this gets sorted out .

@njx58 thank you so much. Its all so confusing as to all the steps i need to do, & i’m not getting much guidance from endocronologist, other than to order & start full dose of Tymlos. He said nothing about testing, so i guess i’ll have to call & ask his nurse.

@patst I recently finished a two-year course of Tymlos. Here's what we did:

1. Baseline DEXA and blood tests (including P1NP, CTX, calcium, PTH)
2. Follow-up blood tests at three months, six months, nine months
3. DEXA at one-year mark, plus blood test
4. Blood test at 18 months
5. DEXA at two-year mark. Blood test. Start Fosamax.
6. I will have a blood test three months into the Fosamax treatment just to monitor.
7. DEXA probably every year.

How are Tymlos users paying for the drug? I have part D prescription through Aetna. Is there a part D prescription insurance that will cover the cost for Tymlos and Forteo? Please share any information. Thanks.

@zambezifalls Every Part D insurer has their own formulary. You'd have to check if they cover Tymlos or Forteo (or generic Forteo.) They are certainly going to need a prior authorization form from the doctor.

I had to switch Part D plans two years ago because Wellcare dropped Tymlos from the formulary. You can use medicare.gov to look up plans that cover these meds.

Even with coverage, you'll be on the hook for the Part D OOP cap, which is $2100. That doesn't even cover one month of Tymlos.

@njx58 I was in a similar situation. I waited until a new year started so I could switch my D coverage. In my area the only company that included tymlos in formulary was UHC. Unfortunately they also have a high monthly premium. I will be done with tymlos end of this year and plan to switch companies based on whatever drug I move to.
