The Strontium Debate: Is it good for bone health?

Posted by meomurian @meomurian, Feb 20, 2023

Is anyone taking strontium for bone health? My husband is reading studies on its benefits. I am currently getting Prolia injections 2x/year.

***Director's Note:***
There’s not enough clinical research to know if strontium citrate effectively prevents or treats osteoporosis. Mayo Clinic does not recomend its use. Clinically researched osteoporosis medications have demonstrated fracture prevention benefit with less risk.

The FDA doesn’t regulate supplements in the same way as prescription drugs, so it's not possible to know if if they are safe or work well or even how much of the main ingredient they contain.

If you wish to take a strontium supplement, it is advised to discuss with your doctor.

Many point out the that the DEXA scans are skewed due to the Strontium Citrate.
But the question that might be better to ask, has the person who uses Strontium Citrate have they fractured while using?
So while the DEXA scan is misleading, I think knowing if it actually protects from fractures is more important in weighing the pros and cons of using.

@oknowwhatpixie There are some informed discussions on this that you may want to see that include research/article links.

Here is a great post by @kathleen1314 who has been researching and taking strontium for a long time.

I have read over 20 articles/videos/research papers & abstracts and IMHO strontium is complicated. I have also commented in the discussion with the referenced post above.

Does anyone have any information regarding strontium, found in some
supplements which claim to be effective for osteoporosis. I am only
familiar with strontium in terms of radioactivity (strontium 90). I have no idea if it is helpful in terms of building or maintaining bones
Thanks for any information

Hello @rn40,

Some research has been done but results were not conclusive enough to show that strontium citrate is effective in treating osteoporosis.

If you wish to take a strontium supplement, it is advised to discuss with your doctor.

I'm a retired R.N. and worked my last 10 years in the alternative/ complimentary field. Meaning we used natural vitamins and supplements to treat conditions.

I developed osteopenia around age 70 and started on the regimen that we gave our patients.
It was a package that Xymogen, one of our suppliers had put together with good results. In 2001 I tried the oral pill and it made me like a zombe. I couldn't think and had no energy to do anything. I only took it for 10 days and gave up on that. I continued tinkering around with my suppliments. The Dr strongly suggested I take the infusion. Which I did. That did the same thing. Wacked me out for 6-8 weeks. So That was the last of that.
. Last April I had a Dexa scan and it indicated I hac very severe ostioporsis.
I didn't stick with that program and now have severe osteoporosis. I was advised to take
and IV medication. I was not going to give another try for another drug. I found a company that has done research with their program and it includes Strontium. It's simple and only 3 products. AlgaeCal is the name of the company and they back their products up by saying they will give your money back if you don't increase your bone density. Their products are 3rd party tested also. So I started that in December 2025. I had another Dexa this April only 4 1/2 months after starting their program. I had a 27% increase in the lumbar spine. If it can do that in 4 months I can't wait to see what it will do by next April.
I suggest you go to their website and read all their info and even call and talk to them. They are very helpful.

I don't understand what the drugs or supplements you took prior to strontium were. It would be helpful to know so that we can understand the path you are on. Also what was the medication infusion that was recommended?
If you go up to the search function at the top of this page and type in strontium you will see that there already discussions that are ongoing. You may find the information useful.

Be sure to check if it is okay for kidneys or liver, and if it affects any other meds/ supplements you are taking.
