Does anyone have any tricks to produce a sputum sample?

Does anyone know of any methods or tricks to produce a sputum sample? I cannot produce one. I have talked to the respiratory therapists, and they did not give me any advice.

JMR69- Bringing up sample:
I believe that following this Autogenic Drainage app immediately after nebulizing helps a lot. I select the 4 1/2 minute option and follow the instructions exactly. I think it helps.

I too never was quite able to produce anything but never asked why that might be so. However, I learned, thanks to needing to buy a new compressor and special Pari nebulizer cup for the Tobramycin i was prescribed earlier this year for 28 days, that apparently — my guess anyway given the info leaflet describing what needed to be happening that arrived with the Tobramycin —, the previous compressor and cup were for me anyway, was not providing small enough particles and enough pressure out of the cup of the 7% saline during the session to work. Once I continued using the PARI ProNeb Max and the PARI cup just for the 7% saline, I began to produce lots of mucous using the breathing technique followed by the huffing and coughing. When I have completed the session I feel better too and sleep well.

@desertdwellerjh Is the pari proneb max ok for everyone do you think? I'm still new to this all and I do get some good sputum out but it takes a lot of energy and hacking. I don't have MAC so far 🤞🏼 I only have a omron and I dont think it's that powerful but I don't even know if more power is better or 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you look at a diagram of the lungs, you'll see that the bronchioles branch in many different directions. In an excellent airway clearance video, Noah Greenspan explained why changing your position and angle is so important in bronchiectasis, as it helps target different airways. He compared it to dipping an apple in caramel. You have to rotate the apple to coat the entire surface.

If your bronchiectasis is in the lower parts of the lungs, you may need to rotate your body, or even position yourself so those airways are nearly upside down, to let gravity help drain mucus, much like turning a ketchup bottle to get the last bit out.

Wow. Why didn't I know this? Seems like pretty obvious info for Drs or therapists to share! I feel like I'm wandering around lost in the woods and trying to find my way alone, except for all of you!

@grammyvictoria I would consult your pharmacist and/or your pulmonologist. I worked very closely with the pharmacist and PA to my pulmonologist because I so wanted to kill off the pseudomonas. When I was taking the rx for TOBI (nickname for Tobramycin) I was advised to first use the same equipment for the 7% saline to clear out as much mucous as possible as well as weaken the protective outer layer of pseudomonas aeruginosa. I was so pleased to ne able to clear out stuff. Your experience may vary, of course.
