Strokes and the effects on not just memory, but emotions. Thoughts?

Posted by dani118 @dani118, 14 hours ago

In 2024, I had two strokes at the same time. The smaller of the two struck the lower-left side of the brain. The larger hit the upper right side of the brain. While I have mostly recovered physically (I still have tremors in my right hand), I also have short-term memory loss. Long-term memory is great; however, sometimes if I don’t write something down, I don’t remember it.

I have also noticed that I have had mood swings and different feelings and emotions. It’s as if my brain was unplugged, plugged back in after being rewired.

It was determined that my out-of-control diabetes and extremely high cholesterol, and the stress of work, led to these events. If anyone elected has experienced these symptoms, I would welcome some thoughts and ideas. Since 2024, I have been back at work (Feb 2025)—but it has been a long journey. Last night I went to lace a pair of shoes and couldn’t remember how to do that. My wife had to reteach me something that I have known since kindergarten.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi.

I had an ischemic stroke on Christmas Eve, 2018.

It left me permanently disabled, almost all of it due to motor deficits on my right side.

For a couple of years after the stroke, I had extreme mood swings. I would laugh at nothing, cry for no reason, get angry, etc.

I eventually got back to near-normal, but it took a while.

My memory became somewhat "porous"; like you, I needed to write a lot of stuff down. Turned out to be a good idea.

I have a YouTube channel about my recovery journey, "From Recovery to Discovery", which you may find helpful:
