Nose cartilage pain, no redness or swelling
Hello. About five days ago, in the middle of the afternoon, I suddenly had pain on the lower right side of my nose. if I didn't touch this area, the pain was about a 2 out of 10, but when I would press the outside of my nose at all the pain would increase to around a 6 out of 10. I had no redness or swelling, no nasal drip, and no pain across the bridge of my nose. This pain decreased the next morning and was gone by the end of that night, without any medication.
Today, I woke up with sinus drip, though that is now gone by the evening as I type this. However, beginning a few hours ago, I now have similar pain to what I had five days go. The difference now is that it's only located on the lower left side of my nose. Again, there is no redness, no swelling and no pain around the bridge of my nose. The other difference is that today is more painful than five days ago (5 out of 10 when not touched, around an 8 when touched).
I am in good health otherwise and am not on any medications. I keep trying to search to see what I may have, but everyone I find who describes this type of pain also mentions having swelling and/or redness, which I do not have. My only change in behavior is recently I have started to use a shampoo with tea tree oil in it, which shouldn't trigger this type of response (so far as I can find).
My PCP is on vacation this week and the other doctor in his office is not someone I have had positive experiences with, to put it mildly. Any insights or recaps of similar incidents are appreciated.
Thanks!!

I just started having the same problem over a week ago. It started just after I had an Endoscopy done. Which seems really strange as they don't touch the nose other then to put oxygen tube in there. I was reading another contributor to this page had had a root canal done, and I had never thought about that. I did have 2 root canals done on the same side of my nose that is hurting. But no pain by my teeth. And like everyone else, there is no redness, very very tiny swelling, and it hurts when I don't touch it, but just a little. But when I DO touch it, it screams pain at me. So, I would love to hear any other poss remedies out there. I would like to try the tea tree oil. I'm already on a ton of medications, I don't need one more.....
I had no idea that you can get shingles in your eyes.....That must have been awful!!
Hi @mshjoynmi, welcome to Connect. I'm sorry to hear you've had this pain with your nose.

What has your doctor said about this pain, @mshjoynmi?
Hi there just wanted to get some answers.
I just woke up last Saturday with a mild pain on the right side of my nose where the nasal bone and Upper Lateral Cartilage meet.
There's no redness or swelling. At first it was on the right side of my nose, but now both sides are a tender. It's slightly painful around a 1-2 if i dont touch it, but when i do apply moderate pressure the pain goes up to 5-6. My nose bled saturday morning out of my left nostril, and yesterday (Tuesday - 3 days after i felt the pain)
Just wanted some clarity on what this is. I've already schedule a visti to my ENT.
Thanks!
Niño
I have had the same issue going on for a few weeks now. I noticed a tenderness that seems to be in the cartilage part at the tip of my nose. There is no redness, swelling, nor bumps anywhere that I notice. It seemed to have gotten better but this morning when I woke up I noticed it hurting again and this time more painful than before. I wonder if it is from something I'm doing during my sleep since it seems to be most noticeable in the morning? I know that I have a habit of pressing on the roof of my mouth and/or my front teeth with my tongue. I am slightly worried because during my last dentist visit he recommended me to see a root canal specialist about a pocket he saw at the root of my right canine tooth (same side with the most tenderness). When I first noticed this pain it would only hurt when I touched or pressed on the area. Now I can feel the tenderness without touching it. One of the things I did notice is that I rub my nose a lot more than I knew I did, so maybe I'm the one causing the pain to go and come?
Is your nose pain issue resolved, is yes then pls tell me how it went away and how long it stayed as I am also having exactly same pain near my nose bridge, no swelling no redness and nothing can be seen in ct scan
I know the original post is. A while back but feel i should share my experience. A few years ago i had pain in and around my nose like i hade been punched in the nose, it was sore always but more so to the touch and every so often it felt like i got a soccer ball to the face.. It would even make me sneeze. I researched it and found one person mention staph infection that described the same punched in the face feeling. It also said that staph in the nose can be dangerous if left untreated due to the fact that it can spread to its neighbor, the brain.... Then it can be deadly. I went to the doctor told him i think i had staph, he said i shouldn't diagnose myself online and it was unlikely. So he did a culture and sure enough i had staph. So antibiotics and bactriban swabbed inside my nostrils was the treatment and it cleared up. However i have had it again since and i believe i have it again now (as of yesterday same distinct pain). So i will go to the doc tomorrow and probably follow the same antibiotic/bactriban routine... I wish there was a natural treatment? I dont like and hardly ever take antibiotics and prefer a more alternative hollistic approach. Thanks
I had my nose operated on 9 years ago (deviated septum) and ever since then I have had face pain around my nose and eyes plus constant headaches.. Checked back with doctor and he did not see anything wrong. About 3 years ago the pain got worse covering my whole face and back to my ears. Also my face is hot with no temperature. Doctors have tried a lot of things with no good results. Now my headaches have gotten worse so I just had a CT done and the bridge of my nose is "crushed" (I am 71 and nothing I can think of that would have caused that). I have a consult coming up, but would like to be prepared before it so I don't have to be in pain any longer that I have to be. It seemed like everything started with the first operation 9 years ago, but pain has increased since then and nothing found to help. Hopefully this CT will help the doctors, but would welcome any options from someone the clinic. Thanks
Hi, @hispoet1 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sounds as though it's been a long journey with your nose and issues following the surgery. I had surgery for a deviated septum a number of years ago, but didn't happen to have any issues (aside from some time in nose packing).

Hoping they can offer some support with all the pain you've undergone and may have some ideas for you on your face pain and headaches.
When is your upcoming consult, @hispoet1? Does anything help give you relief at all for your pain?
Hi, @hispoet1 – I would like to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect along with @lisalucier and other members. I'm 76 and comtemplating a septoplasty to correct my deviated septum but have no experience with nose trauma that I can remember. I think it's good that you've taken the first step to get help for the symptoms you are experiencing. You mentioned the MRI shows that the bridge of your nose is crushed and you are waiting for an upcoming consult with the doctor. Waiting is always the hard part. I think not knowing what may have caused the bridge of your nose to be crushed can also cause some anxiety. I have found that it helps me when I'm waiting for a doctors appointment to write down a list of questions that I would like answered by the doctor and take that list with me to my appointment. This helps me to not forget my questions when talking with the doctor. Sometimes I don't need to refer to the list as writing it down helps me remember. I'm hoping you can give us an update after your consult.
Thanks, my consult is Dec 31st.
