Living with Early Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment - Meet Others

Posted by Lisa Lucier, Moderator @lisalucier, Jun 22 9:45pm

As promised, Mayo Clinic Connect now has a group dedicated to living with Early Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) support group. Follow the group to get notifications when new posts are made.

This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people living with early dementia or MCI, or who are wondering about these conditions or undergoing testing. Let's learn from each other and share stories about living well with these conditions, interacting with others who do not have these diagnoses, and offering tips.

Looking forward to welcoming you and introducing you to other members. Feel free to browse the topics in the Early Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) group or start a new one.

Let's chat. Why not start by introducing yourself?

@fletchette There is a very excellent organization with groups who meets online. (Zoom) Everyone who participates has some form of dementia. If you need help with Zoom, let me know.

There are different groups that have different “flavors”.
One is music, another a woman’s group, a “drop in group”, and others. Everyone is very nice, patient with each other, a safe place to be for us. No judgement, just a chance to be with others.

The organization is Dementia Action Alliance.

They have a page on Facebook too.

There’s no cost for the support groups.

@fletchette
I visited the site and it does seem very interesting. They have very good suggestions on how to keep trucking!
There support groups would be invaluable. Thanks for posting that!

@ashley43725 Start planning on what you will do with your time. You need a reason for tomorrow. I got into animal rescue and then gardening.

How right you are!
I build scale models, some are simple and some are very complicated. I built a model of the Titanic that took a year.
I grow sunflowers in the summer and take walks on country lanes I am familiar with. As I grew up n the woods I used to explore them often. Unfortunately I can no longer walk in the woods by myself, I might get confused, and that cannot be a good thing! How I miss it though ☹️.
My wife loves to travel and we plan on doing a bit of that also.
Reading will help me spend my time and I also like computer games.
So, I do have plans for retirement, as the light in the tunnel is coming ever so close.
Regards, Ashley

Well then,
It’s been a few since I pulled my head out of the sand.
Have been home two weeks after spending almost that at the amazing Mayo Clinic Rochester.
What a privilege it was to be seen and I now have confirmation on diagnosis.
Definitely not something you wanna spitball.
Biopsy came back and along with all tests at MC, I’m living with MCI, Lewy Body with Parkinsonism.
Started the LB med week ago and Parkinson’s med today.
I’m grateful, but still gathering myself with the absolute of it.
I’m staying busy, but finding myself getting tired easier and needing breaks during the day.
Working hard at giving myself permission to process my emotions.
I talk about it a lot.
Ashley has had a generous amount of wisdom since I’ve been on here, I’m working at applying some of it.
Keeping it steady for now.
Craig

@lisalucier I am a 77 year old active woman dealing with forgetfulness. Comes and goes but has been getting worse. I think this indicates mild cognitive decline but am not sure.

Hi, @bigeyz00 - dealing with forgetfulness when you are trying to live an active lifestyle sounds challenging.

Here is some Mayo Clinic information that may be useful to you:

- Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mild-cognitive-impairment/symptoms-causes/syc-20354578

Have you gotten to speak with your doctor about the forgetfulness that comes and goes? If so, what did he or she say?

@midnightwalker - I'm also glad for this group for those diagnosed with MCI and Alzheimer's.

How did the donepezil (Aricept 5) go for you?

@lisalucier Aricept 5mg took me about a month to really get used to. The first week was filled with alarmingly real "dreams" based on a jumble of things that occurred during that day. Could be a memory from that day of a dog barking, making dinner, watching a program on TV. .. All mixed up and coming out with me being lost somewhere, no husband anywhere to help me out and panicking...Very strange but interesting once you realize what's happening in your brain. Within two weeks, I had fewer to no dreams. When doctor suggested after a year to go to Aricept 10mg, I said no. My memory has improved and seems to be holding. So that's my story with Aricept 5mg...
