PRRT Treatment: What to expect?

Posted by rkklinger @rkklinger, May 29 10:35am

My husband is having PRRT with Lutathera on Tuesday. After reading the information sent from Mayo, he is a little concerned about side effects. What should we expect after the treatment Tuesday afternoon? Are there immediate side effects? Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks for responding. He has never had radiation therapy prior to the PRRT. His first tumor was surgically removed in 1995. At that time, there was no treatment available. His 4th treatment will be December 2. He also has Lanriotide every 28 days. Did you have a decrease in tumors from the PRRT?

@rkklinger: Yes! My First MRI with Evoist Contrast (best for NET tumor measurement) was done in late Jan 2025 revealing drastic tumor resolution - several tumors were not visible (gone), several had shrunk to 2021 size and one just remained stable! It’s June 2026 now and each 3mo MRI has shown tumors slightly smaller or remain stable. No progression! Stable is great!
I am so grateful to have received this “gift” of treatment that has given me more great time with my loved ones. Life is good!
When first diagnosed in 2021, it was difficult to see light at the end of the tunnel.., it all seems so black with a “terminal” diagnosis. Now I see my situation with positivity, realizing NET spreads microscopically anywhere; however, I look at the future positively now, knowing NET research and innovation has many tools to help me with progression as it appears.
I hope to hear from you next January when you get results of your PRRT Lutathera treatment!
Put as much positive thoughts into your treatment because by asserting energy into your daily thoughts really help. It is difficult not knowing what is happening in your body, but I visualized those nasty cancer cells “exploding” into oblivion!
Maybe this will help you too?
Best results for you… Bette

We have another question for those who have had the PRRT treatment. My husband had his 1st treatment on June 2. Everything went well. He has experienced the fatigue that many of you commented on. He is starting to lose his hair. We are wondering if that is also a side effect of the radiation. He just returned from a Canadian fishing trip. Coming back, they put a geiger counter on him. It registered 1700. The guard said that was the highest they had ever seen. However, our son googled it and found that is more of the median number than extremely high.

@rkklinger last week I also returned from a Canadian fishing trip and set off the radiation detectors at the US border. It was one month after my 4th treatment and the drive through gate, large and small hand held detectors all registered high levels. One of the dectectors said the radiation source was plutonium which got them pretty excited. Fortunately, I had a letter from Mayo describing my treatment. The agents still had to fax the letter and radiation readings back to DC to get approval for me to return. It took 45 minutes.

@tomrennie, I have stage 4 neoindcrine cancer. The original tumor was blocking my small intestine and was removed. Then discovered mets on my liver, lymph nodes and a tumor on my rib. Did 4 months of lanreotide after which found the cancer had progressed and new mets in bladder, prostate and a new bone tumor on my clavicle. Have received 2 prrt with luthera and have my 3rd next week

@thunderdad5
Be sure to let us know how your 3rd PRRT treatment goes. Sending prayers that all will go well and there will be stabilization or tumor shrinkage.

Treatment went well. Was able to sleep for a good part of it. Not much of a appetite the day of treatment due to gas and bloating, but I try to drink allot. Just feeling really tired so far. Will be going for blood work early next week as the treatments do cause my white cell and nuetraphil counts to drop allot. Have needed nuepergeon injections after each treatment so far. Those cause allot of bone pain for about 24 hours. Taking over the counter pain reliever makes it tolerable. Claritin doesnt help.
3 down, 1 more to go.... then a dotatate pet scan to see how effective the treatments were.

@thunderdad5 You can see the light at the end of the treatment tunnel with one more to go. You have to feel good about that?

I'll feel good when I get the results of the dotate scan showing that the cancer is stable and maybe some of the tumors have shrunk.

@thunderdad5 I can relate to that every time that I get my dotatate scans. My fingers are crossed for both of us. Heck, for all of us.
