Considering Forteo

Posted by lisitabelle @lisitabelle, Feb 22 7:54am

Hello everyone,

My doctor would like me to start Forteo. I am 62 and have what is considered severe osteoporosis. It has been stable for many years and I have been treating it holistically (fit and exercise) and with Evista. Due to my age and underlying Panhypopituitarism (needing steroids for most my life) , my doctor is very concerned about my bones.

Has anybody used Forteo and how has that been? I am concerned about side effects and he mentioned that the black box warning of osteocarcinoma has been removed, but I still worry about that as well. It’s one of those things that I need to consider the benefits versus the negative side effects.

Thank you all so much for any information you may have.

My doc wants me on Forteo but insurance wants a bisphosphonate first, which I know is counterproductive. Has anyone had trouble getting insurance to cover Forteo as a first bone med? It’s challenging to get information. I told my doc I did not want to go on a bisphosphonate and she said Forteo is safe—but then I read that you have to take bisphosphonates or the like after Forteo. I guess she didn’t want to tell me that.

@zhaner Do you have any evidence of low/no trauma fractures? That is how a friend got teriparatide (brand name Forteo) paid for by insurance. Even if I have to self-pay, my plan once I go on drugs is to do teriparatide => romosozumab (Evenity) => bisphosphonate to maintain. This plan is based on evidence from Dr. Michael Lewiecki and others.

Sounds like you already know about sequencing OP drugs, but here are 2 links to doctor presentations in case anyone else reading this thread wants:

Thanks —now if only my insurance company would get with modern evidence! Appreciate the links. 🤞
