Hi, could your surgeon tell that the Fundoplication had slipped? before he did your Linx surgery? I had a Fundoplication surgery in 2010..Every thing was fine. Until I fell very hard on stomach/rib cage. Both feet slipped out from underneath me on a step muddy incline. It knocked the air out of me and hurt so bad. Do you think that could have moved the Fundoplication? But it looks ok on the upper GI test. The barium swallow text shows esophagus is having spasms. And spasms in the vocal cords. But a tho all text show to b normal I’m having pure acid and spams, it hurts to swallow, plus this time I’m hvin asthma related to acid, or at least that’s what I think it is. Because I’ve never had asthma before. Any information would help
Thank you

The slipped Nissan did not show up on upper GI or with any endoscopies I've had. She only found it when she went in to re-repair the hole in the diaphragm which was almost 3 cm. The hernia exists because of the hole in the diaphragm. Maybe the hole enlarged when you fell?

The one doctor did upper GI and found I have a small hernia but it’s so small it doesn’t need to be fixed. But I wld like to fix it before it gets big. But I can’t seem to get my point across to the doc. Maybe it’s the way I go about it. They don’t like you to tell them how to do there job. But it is me that’s suffering. 😐

Before my last surgery they told me the same thing, that the hernia was so small it wasn't a problem. But when they got in there they said 25% of my stomach was up through the diaphragm. The doctor said the imaging is only a guide and don't always truly show how bad it can be. They told me standing or lying down, having your stomach full or empty, can change the hernia. I would get other opinions. Be persistent and really let them know how you feel.

Okay, thank u so much. That does make a lot of since. It wld appear smaller lying down. Than when standing up. To bad doctors are not as easy to talk to. But yes I will be persistent. I can’t give into them it’s affecting my breathing. My oxygen level is good. But I can’t hardly breathe out. Sorry to keep going on. But it’s nice to talk with someone else. That understands me. Without me begging them to listen.

Persistence is key. When I began my quest to have another surgery I kept telling my GI Dr that because of the sensations I was having when I swallowed it felt like my stomach was sliding again. When I had my 1st hiatal hernia repair in 1994 most of my stomach was in my chest. For a year before my surgery I was maxed out on 3 meds. I was double dosed on my prevacid, double dosed on zantac, taking liquid carafate and even using over the counter antacids. The hurtburn never stopped coming back. Be politely persistent and tell them they would change their mind quickly if they had to walk in your shoes. Keep pushing for a referral to a surgeon who SPECIALIZES in hiatal hernia repairs, Nissan fundoplication s, and LINX bands. Do not go to a general surgeon who has it on their list of can do's. You want someone who does this all the time.

I will start looking for a surgeon that specializes in this field. I think my problem is over my Gastroenterologist s head. Thank you for information 😊

I had problems with my digestive system since I was about 13 years old. It took 45 years to find a doctor that fully listened and figured out what was wrong. I had times when I would be in what I call remission and felt great but then the problems would come back. Doctors kept brushing it under the rug and telling they couldn't find anything wrong. Then when I started getting acid into my lungs and ENT doctor took it serious and sent me to a doctor that supposedly could fix me. That is when I had the Nissen Fundoplication with a hernia repair. That, unfortunately, wasnt the fix. It worked for 6 months before I started getting acid in my lungs again. That is the doctor that told me my hernia wasn't bad enough to have fixed. He didn't give me options so I did some searching and found a great doctor that found what was wrong. Now I'm starting to do well again. If the doctor you're seeing isn't listening find another that will. I'm in western NY, where are you located?

Do you have Barrett's esophagus? If it is present you could use that as a factor in your decision making process, to help decrease the risk for esophageal cancer. If not stress that you want to prevent it and politely demand a referral to a surgeon who specializes in hiatal hernia repairs. Like you said you're the one who is suffering and long term use if proton pump inhibitors such as nexium and prevacid have detramental effects to our bodies especially neurologically. I know this from personal experience. Good luck.

Hi, I’m in Oklahoma. When the acid was getting in your lungs did it make breathing harder? Or did it give you any asthma symptoms? I’ve looked at some many different websites. I can’t remember what Barrett’s esophagus is.

Hello, I’ve only had the Fundoplication surgery. So I can’t answer about the LINX surgery. But I do think you have more gas from the Fundoplication surgery. But I will take that over the other symptoms. Before you had your LINX surgery. Did the acid that was getting into your lungs make it hard to breathe or any asthma symptoms?hope your doing better:)

Has anyone had acid induced asthma? I have a chronic cough. If I drink something cold it makes me cough or if I talk that makes me cough. After I start coughing is when somethings shuts off my airway. I’ve been on several different cough meds but that doesn’t help. Anyone?
