After colon resection: What helps with severe gas?
11 weeks since surgery, I was wondering if it's fairly common to have severe gas to the point that it hurts, so bad that it feels like your back is gonna break 😔

Thank you all for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it. The gas has improved, I'm still having it, but not as painful. Normal ating is still difficult, so much upsets. my stomach now. I have had another issue come up. I have blood in my stools, basically every time I go. Not a lot, but its there. I told my dr and he said he wants to do a scope, but I told him I need some time to process this. In the meantime he has orrdered abdominal x-rays. Does anyone know what an x-ray would show. Thank you for your time.

Have someone drive you around on a bumpy road. Not to bumpy that it hurts but you can also apply a little pressure on your surgery site. Or hold a pillow and apply pressure. It really helps. Especially after surgery. I did it and it worked for me.

1 Reaction@pamela131526, holding a pillow and applying pressure is a great tip. Did you have surgery recently? I look forward to learning more about your journey.
I am about to undergo colon resection at the end of the month and reading through the comments has stirred up a whole slew of more things to worry about. I am dreading this more than anything. I have been told how much better survival rates are for colon cancer these days but surviving isn't the same as quality of life it sounds. To everyone having complications, I am so sorry for what you are experiencing. I should have known better than to think life what go back to what it was prior to my cancer diagnosis.
@blusso I had a colon resection last July and I too was dreading the after effects having read about all of the possibilities. My worst fear was having constant diarrhea. I am happy to say that it’s not been as bad as I feared. In fact, I feel a lot more regulated than I was before hand. The first three months of my recovery actually went well and I was being very careful about eating and walking, etc., I have since experienced some after effects like bloating, distention, and back pain.
I have to note that I already had acid reflux (and taking PPIs for it), which causes similar symptoms so it’s not new to me and it’s hard to know whether it’s the surgery or the existing condition that’s causing this.
It has been a journey to figure out what are the triggers. I would suggest early on to be just very careful about what you eat and try to eat a low residue diet for the first few weeks. I gradually added more fibre because that’s important for a healthy colon. I found that eating a healthy diet and getting up and walking a bit after eating, as others have mentioned, really helps with gas.
It is all very experimental. I’ve taken gasx when I need it. I find that ginger tea or even a little piece of candied ginger helps to settle my stomach. I changed over to lactose free milk and yogurt. I switched to one cup of decaf a day.
But I guess you can see from the comments here that one size doesn’t fit all and it will be a bit of a trial and error. I just hope you don’t get discouraged and don’t worry too much about it (like I did) beforehand. Just take things slow and let your body heal.
Attention to my breathing has helped with bloating and anxiety.
Wishing you the best result!
