Nerve and weakness issues after food poisoning in Sri Lanka
Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone here might have experienced something similar or can share what their eventual diagnosis turned out to be.
Earlier this year I was on holiday in Sri Lanka and developed a sudden gastrointestinal illness with severe vomiting and stomach cramps after a meal. The stomach illness settled, but within days I started developing neurological symptoms that have now been ongoing for several months.
My symptoms include:
* Weakness and heaviness in both legs (especially my thighs)
* Difficulty getting up from the floor or low chairs
* Muscle twitching (mainly calves and hands)
* Fatigue
* Occasional balance problems
* A feeling that my legs just don’t work as they used to
I’ve also had recurrent mouth ulcers, sore gums and a very sore tongue on and off since all of this started.
I’ve had extensive investigations including:
* MRI
* Lumbar puncture
* Lyme disease testing
* Autoimmune blood tests
* Infectious disease blood tests
* Two EMG/nerve conduction studies
My neurologist has told me that it seems to be affecting my peripheral nervous system, but they still don’t know exactly what the diagnosis is. A lot of conditions have been ruled out, and I’m being monitored with follow-up appointments and repeat nerve testing.
I’m not looking for a diagnosis on Reddit, but I’m wondering whether anyone has experienced neurological symptoms developing after a gastrointestinal illness or suspected food poisoning.
If you have, I’d really appreciate hearing:
* What was eventually diagnosed?
* How long did it take to get answers?
* Did you recover?
* Was there anything that helped?
Thank you so much.

Hello @ramme01, Welcome to Connect. It sounds like you have a good care helping you figure out a possible diagnosis. I don't have any experience but I am hoping others can chime in and offer some suggestions. I thought I would share the Mayo Clinic information along with one of the conditions listed with symptoms similar to what you mentioned.

@thurlibier, @cheywards, @u4gmlglm and @blu15 have experience with food poisoning followed by an illness and may have some suggestions or information to share with you.
How soon is your follow up appointment?
I ran into a dead end at mayo and went to Uab. They started me on voyxact and it has helped.
Berger disease probably started by food poison I will go back to uab mid July. Mayo did not address because gfr was less than 30. Uab doctors were willing to try anway and it seems to have worked.
Doctor at mayo and back in Mississippi were trying to kill me with high doses of cell cept and prednisone
