What was your first sign of cancer?

Hello, I have just a quick question. What was your the first symptom of cancer? What was the first sign? The reason I ask is, because my WBC has been elevated for the past 2 years and it’s really elevated on this lab draw. I have MS and have my labs done every 6 months- a year. My neurologist asked if I see a hematologist or oncologist. I haven’t felt bad just extremely tired. Which that comes with MS, but I can take an adderall and go straight to sleep.

Hi @trabow28 Reading through some of your other comments, I’d say, along with your weight loss and elevated blood numbers, it might be worth having a visit with at hematologist. There have been some changes for your health. Some might be attributed to your MS diagnosis but it would probably give you some peace of mind to know for sure.
I don’t know if you will require a referral from your primary care physician for a hematologist or not. But even your PCP could take blood work. Let them know your symptoms and that you would like a complete blood count (cbc) with differential.
A CBC is a blood test that measures your red blood cells, hemoglobin, white blood cells and platelets. A CBC with differential also counts each type of white blood which would be helpful to get a clearer picture of your blood panel.
Have you talked with your PCP?

@loribmt thank you. My red blood cells and lyphocytes are low my hemoglobin, hematocrit, neutrophil is high. But thank you again for your reply. My primary care is sending me for colonoscopy and breast exam. I guess we will see how that goes.

@donnademps I’ve lost a lot of weight about 80lbs, but I was thinking that was because I had a hysterectomy.

@trabow28 I thought it was bc I had stomach issues. My G.P. sent me for an endoscopy with nothing serious showing, so I just had to "deal" with my loss of appetite. I think I know now.

I was having a lot of back pain and feeling very tired and run down all the time. I kept getting injured easily, from doing things that had never been a problem before. I honestly never thought it was cancer, it didn't even cross my mind even though I knew I had a lump in my breast. I got those all the time and they would come and go over the years.

Isn’t Adderall a beta blocker which slows down your heart rate? I might be wrong but if it is then you would definitely feel very tired. As a cancer patient I never had any symptoms, it was found during a ct scan, some cancers have symptoms but then it’s possibly advanced, it would be better if you’re feeling that something is wrong then see your doctor and ask for help to be sure.

I was having pain in my underarm like as if I had a swollen gland. So I had had a few mammograms that said dense breast which my doctor said just ment that it made it hard to say that my breast were free of cancer and to continue to have mammograms annually even in my 70’s! So even though I only ever saw once warning for sore under arm I went in 6 months early for another mammogram. I am glad I did because I caught it so early level 1 ER
Positive. Had lumpectomy of the 2 small tumors and just finished radiation all in 8 months! So ignoring pain is not a good idea! Even when you wonder if you might be over reacting, It is better to listen to your body,

@cathyj1623 , That’s true, I did follow-up afterwards that I mentioned the wrong medication.

I quickly got a hematoma of the tongue, surface blister. It become swollen and I went to the ED because I was concerned about how swollen it might get and block air passage. A ENT doctor was called in and indicated nothing to worry about and to see him in 2 weeks. In three days I got more concern when it did not go away, and went to my dentist, who I figured would know about this. He was very concerned. He sent me to a dental specialist, who did not like it and immediately sent me to an oral surgeon MD/DDS. He had me admitted that day to the hospital and operated on 2 days later. Biopsy confirmed that it was denocarcinoma of the tongue, a very rare form of tongue cancer. I cannot imagine what would have happened if I followed the ENT doctor advice and waited 2 weeks.
