What are some therapies for painful rib injury?

Posted by lwbarker @lwbarker, Jun 3 10:17am

I fell across a low table a week ago, injuring my right ribs. Urgent care Xray showed no fracture. Doc prescribed ice, heat, lidocaine patches, rest, Tylenol, maybe voltaren, when patch is off for as long as it takes. Strong Pain when raising up from lying or sitting. 4 days after injury, some lessening, but now pain increasing. At 80 y.o., first time with this. Suggestions?
Thanks

lwbarker, fractures are often not evident on early xrays. I would ask for an MRI, especially if the pain is increasing. Increasing could mean that a fracture is unstable or unable to reconnect. An MRI would also determine if there there is injury to the spine. If the rib is a simple fracture, there isn't much remedy. And there isn't much sense in knowing. They are painful and take some time to heal. If you were to take a bone building medication (like Forteo) it would heal more quickly. Many express pain relief when taking Forteo after a fracture.
If you roll to your side evenly when rising from supine it can be less painful.
Have you ever been diagnosed with osteoporosis.

@lwbarker even if the ribs are not fractured, you may have damaged the cartilage. This can be very painful, as the day goes by the pain increases until the whole chest feels as if it's locking up.
I would recommend you buy a compression vest like this https://uscompression.com/product/custom-compression-vest/ which will prevent the damaged parts jangling against one another.
Wear it all day and perhaps in bed.
Could be a few weeks before things are back to normal.

@lwbarker further to my post above, you might also consider something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BPZGCK5 chest support, which does much the same job but is perhaps more adjustable and less hot.
The aim is to keep the damaged parts from moving too much.

After a botched chiropractic session, I ended up at the emergency room visit the next day with extreme rib pain. I was diagnosed with costochondritis (chest wall pain caused by inflammation of the joints between your ribs and breastbone. Symptoms include sharp, stabbing chest pain that is worse with movement). I was told to take NSAIDS (anti inflammatory) but there wasn't anything else they could do. I was told it would last approximately 6 weeks and they didn't lie. It was almost 6 weeks to the day before the pain finally subsided. I wish you the best and hope you find relief for your situation.

I took a bad fall several years ago and fractured 7 ribs. Hospitalized for a week. Dr prescribed all sorts of opiates which didn’t touch the pain. 6 weeks into recovery, I started taking 800 mg of ibuprofen which drastically reduced my pain. Threw the opiates in the trash.

@v8auto Thanks for the suggestion. I did try a wrap which made it feel better while wearing, not certain it helps heal.

It’s lucky that nothing broke in the fall. But sprains, strains and soft tissue injuries take longer to heal. Rib pain can be tricky due to potential problems that can occur. Chest binders can be helpful but they set you up for possible respiratory complications, pneumonia being #1. Yes it hurts to take a deep breath but not doing deep breathing exercises does not allow you to expire from deep in your lungs. If you were given narcotic pain meds be especially cautious because they can decrease your respiratory effort.
