I take New Chapter Bone Strength calcium pills, which contain vitamin K because it helps direct calcium to the bones. That calcium is sourced from algae vs limestone which some calcium carbonate supplements come from. I alternate those calcium pills with Citrical Petites, which are calcium citrate, along with a vitamin K pill. I also take AlgaeCal collagen powder, which I mix in a fruit smoothie. It contains Fortibone, which is supposed to help bones. I also take extra Vitamin D as my blood levels are low, and I take Magnesium Glycinate, 240-300 mg a day. I have decided to avoid osteoporosis medications.

@daisy17 I have completed 2 years of Tymlos and now my osteoporosis doctor wants me to take the Reclast infusion. I do not want to take the infusion because of so many people having terrible side effects for a long time. I am just beginning to feel like I want to avoid all osteoporosis medications. I like what you are doing and am very interested to know how long you have been doing this and if you have had good results. Please let me know. Thank you!!

@nana50 I've read you will have to take Reclast or something else after Tymlos to maintain your gains: "treatment with Tymlos (abaloparatide) should be followed by an antiresorptive agent, such as a bisphosphonate, to maintain the benefits gained during its use. This is because bone mass and strength can rapidly deteriorate after stopping Tymlos without subsequent treatment."

I take a lot of supplements but don't know if they are helping, I'm due for a DEXA scan soon. I have parathyroid issues which affect my BMD in a bad way. Surgery is not an option, I'm being monitored for possible ablation. It's a long story. I am just hoping to maintain what I have since I know supplements won't build BMD. Due to this, Tymlos and Forteo are not options for me. I don't want Evenity or Prolia and read bisphosphonates offer minimal benefits for fracture prevention.

Here are the supplements I take. Be sure to discuss options with your doctor. My doctor wants me to take Fosamax but respects my decision to decline.

Vitamin K: This helps direct calcium to your bones. I take two forms of Vitamin K in high doses: 180mcg of vitamin K2 MK-7 (Menaquinone-7) TrueVantage brand and
45,000 mcg (45 mg) of vitamin K2 MK-4 (Menaquinone-4) Life Extension K2 High Potency brand.
These high doses are discussed more in a topic in this support group titled: Vitamin K: High Doses of MK-4 and MK-7 Show Promising Results

Collagen as Fortibone: I take a daily powdered collagen supplement that contains Fortibone, which has been shown in studies to help bones. The cheapest brand I found on Amazon is AlgaeCal brand. It's cheaper if you buy two or three at a time. I make a smoothie with it along with some juice, banana, and other fruit. It also contains 11 grams of protein per serving.

Protein powder: Protein is important for your bones so you might want to consider a supplement if your diet doesn't contain enough. I use Oath Nutrition Clear Whey Isolate Protein Powder. Their Frosty Lemonade is my favorite flavor. Mixed with water it takes like foamy lemonade. I've tried other protein powders but most of them don't taste good.

Prunes: Studies have shown that eating 5-6 prunes a day can help bones.

Magnesium is also important, so I take 250-300mg of magnesium glycinate/day.

Of course, I also take calcium, vitamin D, as well as C, B complex and fish oil capsules. Once calcium supplement I like is Seen Calcium Chews, which gets its calcium from food. Each chew contains 500mg calcium.

I also walk and exercise. I like Brick House Bones on Facebook, by Dr Lisa Moore, a PT specializing in osteoporosis. She has free exercise videos.

I was on Fosamax for 5 years then went on a drug holiday for 2 years. All the while I was taking OsteoMatrix by Shaklee and multivitamins. My Dexa was stable until my drug holiday. (DEXA scores 10 yrs ago: Spine -2.9, Hip -1.4, Now: Spine -2.6, Hip -1.4 (it had dipped to -1.2 during this period) My doctor said they needed to continue something to slow down any loss. I started AlgaeCal Collogen 3 months ago to try and take some control back into my own hands. I do understand how personal these decisions are. Although I have had a decent experience so far, I am still worried about lasting effects of medications as I am a very active person and don't want that to be impacted.
I just had my first Reclast infusion yesterday - I was extremely hesitant from what I read. My daughter is an orthopedic surgeon and I asked her, but she is not schooled in these medicines, but understands how they work. She does a lot of surgeries on bone breaks due to osteoporosis. I stayed very hydrated (which I always do) and I have not had any signs of side effects yet. I didn't have any side effects from Fosamax either.
FYI - I am also very active - walk 3-4 miles 3-4 x/week and do weight bearing exercises - this has been my life long habit. I used to run but decided a few years ago to stick to fast walking.

@daisy17 Update: Since I posted this, I started taking high doses of Vitamin K in the forms of MK-4 and MK-7. I posted a discussion on this under the topic heading: Vitamin K: High Doses of MK-4 and MK-7 Show Promising Results

After reading that adequate protein is needed for bones, I started taking a protein powder that I mix in a smoothie with the collagen powder. The brand I found that has no unpleasant aftertaste is Oath Nutrition Clear Whey Isolate Protein Powder (from Amazon). My favorite flavor is the Frosty Lemonade.
