Book Recommendation
I am new to this group. Just diagnosed with prostate cancer and have consults coming up at end of month with medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and prostate surgeon to discuss treatment options and initial framing of a plan. I have been reading and watching as much as I can from internet. But, I thought perhaps I should have a book. I went on Amazon and unfortunately there were so many of them, I got overwhelmed again. Which seems to be the biggest challenge of getting this disease is getting overwhelmed by information of all kinds and qualities. In any case, would someone recommend a known good objective book for someone trying to navigate this maze. Thank you for any Book Recommendations. I would like a book to reference. Thank you, Dan

@ucla2025 Thank you very much for your input. Dan
To All: Thank you for the recommendations on Books. I appreciate it. Dan
Two things: During my first visit with a radiologist, he recommended I read "Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer by Dr. Patrick Walsh."
I read it and realized that the co-author Dr. Schaeffer, as well as many of the chapter authors, were from Northwestern Medical. I quickly asked myself, why am I not going to Northwestern? (which is two hours away from me). I switched to Northwestern and feel like I got the best possible surgeon and support services.
Meaning, if you can find a Prostate Cancer center, do so. The book talks a lot about this in the surgery chapter.
Second book: If you have surgery, for managing post surgery incontinence, the guidelines in "Life After Prostate Cancer and Other Medical Conditions: A Step-By-Step Guide to Stop Urinary Leakage in Ten Weeks
by Vanita Gaglani" have been super helpful. Is it well written? Nope. Is it repetitive-holy smokes, yes. But, the techniques, exercises and concepts this therapist offers has been really helpful for me. Note: Get the 2019 edition with two smiling seniors on the front, not the older one with two seniors frolicking on a beach. It's pricy at $40, but I figured I would pay gladly pay $40 if I could shorten this stretch by even a few weeks.

3 ReactionsHi Dan. My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 and has been on active surveillance ever since. There are two books I recommend reading as soon as possible following diagnosis. The first just came out earlier this year, I believe, and is titled "Fight Cancer Like A Man" by Dr. Stephen Petteruti. I also recommend checking out his website "intellectualmedicine", as well as his YouTube Channel under the same name. I've never looked at prostate cancer the same after being introduced to some of his concepts. A second book that was enlightening to me was "Overdiagnosed" by Dr. H. Gilbert Welch, Dr. Lisa M. Schwartz, and Dr. Steven Woloshin. That book was published in 2011, but I just became aware of it recently. Chapter 4 of that book is entitled "We Look Harder for Prostate Cancer, How Screening Made It Clear That Overdiagnosis Exists in Cancer". It blew my mind that this book was published 15 years ago. When researching, it is important to look at differing perspectives. You will not learn of the concepts discussed in these books in conventional medicine. Its "standards of care" simply do not allow for it. Best wishes on your journey. Love and light to you and yours.
