Depends pads. Old vs new

Posted by budisnothome @budisnothome, 4 days ago

Has anyone tried the new thinner style depends guards? Does it hold very much liquid and stay in place? Why did they mess with something so many of us rely on...

Hi,
Been using the Depends shields to catch dribbles for years but find them a little flimsy and seem to bunch up a little. Have switched over to the Depends guards max coverage pads which have a lot larger coverage area with just a little more “padding” than the thinner shields. Seems to be working a lot better.

Have you looked into the Tena pads? Not very thick, but very wide and very absorbent, I was using a much thicker pad that held the same amount, but wasn’t as wide. The Tena Pads surprised me,

Sorry...I am not familiar with a change to the "Guards" pads. I had the usual progression from full diapers, to "Guards", to now what are the thinnest "Shields" over the course of maybe 8-9 months. I am ~14 months post-RP, and I still wear the Shields for unexpected squirts and leaks. I have not seen ads for "new and improved" or however they marketed the new, different Guards. I still have 1-2 Shields in my pants pocket at all times. I used to keep one "Guard" in my pocket, and a few in my car if I would be out for an extended period of time. Incontinence is about the only thing that I can say progressed relatively well in my post-op first year. I just wish I could be 100% continent again without having to wear jockey style underwear to properly affix the Shields to the fabric of my undershorts. I was previously a comfortable and loose-hanging boxers guy. I hate jockey style. In fact, I had some skin infections/rashes when I switched to jockey style to accommodate the Shields. Even the barely wet Shield pressed against your warm skin will see that little bit of urine set up an infection in the folds of skin on your penis. I use a special anti-fungal bar soap in the shower everyday that contains Chlortrimazole. I only use it for c cleansing my genitals...it is not a full-body soap....especially at $12.00/bar. It keeps any looming infections at bay. The good news is that you WILL regain your continence...it just takes time. If your urologist did not offer you a prescription order for "Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy" (PFPT), ask for/demand one. Your insurance will likely initially-approve only two sessions, as did mine (Medicare Advantage Plan HMO), but my PFPT Therapist merely wrote a simple justification for a total of 8 sessions which were approved. There are MANY exercises and breathing techniques beyond the standard Kegel's that we all see and do. I was amazed with the additional diagrams and video links that I was sent to do the exercises. Good luck to you.

An interesting problem with the jockey shorts and the infections.

I’ve worn jockey shorts all my life so putting a pad in was no big deal. I just never liked the loose feeling of wearing boxers

I’ve been wearing either shields for the first few years and pads for the last 3+ years. I’ll frequently wear the same pad all day, It will get wet and wetter, and I never had a rash or an infection. I guess some people’s urine is just much more aggressive than others. I throw my pads into a garbage pan near my bed and they sit there for a week until the next garbage pick up and they don’t even smell. So much difference from one person to the next. My wife is extremely sensitive to smells and doesn’t ever mention it

@budisnothome The Depends light shields are smaller than the Max coverage ones which measure 7.2x10.6”. To me move coverage area is better.

I have been using the Depends Guards Maximum pads for approximately 8 years. I experimented with other products but I found these to be the best protection for the price. I ordered the new Depends Guards Maximum pads from Amazon last month and when I opened the package and saw how thin the pads were versus the previous version I immediately returned them to Amazon thinking they were an inferior product as they looked so thin and came in a white bag which said "Made in China". However, when I went to my local drug store I bought the new Depends Guards Maximum pads which were in somewhat similar packaging to the original product with the words "New and Improved". I opened the package and found the same thin pads but I tried them and they seemed to work as well as the original product; possibly even better. I also did some "googling" and a number of people posted that they thought these thinner pads would be inferior but found them to be at least equal to the previous version or possibly even better because of the wider design at the top.

What I quietly, subtly noticed is that in my post-op reality, my un-erect penis is in fact, slightly shorter than before...the "internal" part of my penis, but...the outside...the skin of my penis, remains as it was. Thus, I have a few more "folds" of skin on the underside, which is where even just "drops" of urine can settle in the crevices of the extra folds of skin, and quickly set up a rash and infection. This potential is made worse by me wearing tight-fitting jockey style underwear to keep my "Shields" product in place for incontinence. I tried affixing a Shield to my boxers but it doesn't work because boxers do not have a bottom "panel" of fabric like jockey style do. My Shield would move around and feel uncomfortable, AND...not do its job. It only took 2-3 attempts before I caved in and started wearing jockey style underwear. That cost me close to $200 in new underwear. Ugh.
Because removal of the prostate includes removal of the portion of urethra that ran through it (~ 3/4"-1"), when the urologist rejoins the remaining penile urethra to the bladder (anastomosis procedure), there is a stretching of the urethra to allow that to happen, with sutures holding it all together until it heals. So...the shorter, rejoined urethra draws-up the penis as a result. And of course, within that small length of urethra that runs through the prostate, is the most important of the two "sphincters" that we have to control urine flow...thus post-op incontinence, until our brain and Kegel's can retrain the one remaining weaker sphincter to control and hold our urinary continence.

It sounds like you’re getting to the fact that you have not been circumcised and that is part of the problem. I have been so it does make a difference. Other people have reported what you’ve been having problems with, but not mentioned the circumcision issue.

I know that using Desitin can prevent that kind of issue from happening, but it doesn’t always work for people with prostate cancer.

The cutting of the urethra and sewing it back together without the prostate is an issue that’s discussed a lot. Definitely affects the length of the penis. I don’t think you ever get that length back, but they claim it’s not more than about a half inch. Results would vary I suspect. Maybe if you had a huge prostate, it would cut the length even more.

@jeffmarc -

“I throw my pads into a garbage pan near my bed and they sit there for a week until the next garbage pick up and they don’t even smell. ”

Same here regarding the lack of smell. That was something I was actually worrying about ahead of time, as both my wife and I are super-sensitive to odors.

I hydrate fairly well, my urine is barely pale yellow, and I think that does help. I think I eliminate water more than anything else.

Turtle wiener - more and more, I think I’m one of the lucky few in that that hasn’t happened to me. I actually plan to ask about it at my next appointment in July, because I lost nothing, so with the daily pump regimen I follow, I expect to come out ahead once I’m through with that. 😉

Yes...I am circumcised. That isn't the issue. I believe that losing that 1/2 - 1" in length caused an extra fold or two of my foreskin. I look at it, and it looks more "bunched up." I guess I am OK with losing the 1/2 - 1" in length...going from 12" to 11" won't be a problem!!! Haha!!!
