Degenerative discs irritating nerves, causing foot numbness
Has anyone had a problem with degenerative discs chemically irritating
nerves, causing foot numbness? No nerve compression, as far as we know.
What did you do for it?

@soby, I have idiopathic small fiber neuropathy but only have the numbness and some tingling in my legs and feet. I also have degenerative disc disease and have thought that my spine may play a part in my neuropathy symptoms. I haven't found much that helps with the numbness in my feet but always looking for what may help. For now I just make sure that I keep the skin on my feet and legs moisturized daily since the nerves are near the skin and it seems to calm my feet some at night when I put lotion on my feet and also put some loose stretchy socks over the feet after applying the lotion. I mostly use a magnesium lotion but think any moisturizer is better than nothing.
I did find a research paper that I think may describe what may be happening but it doesn't seem like there has been much study on the question.

I did a search of Connect using - radiculopathy +"no compressed nerves" that found quite a few comments from members if you want to scan through them while you wait for other members to respond - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/.

1 Reaction@soby No not for the Numbness I’ve seen specialist and nothing. I’m going to see a Neurologist June 17 th.
yes. I have had numbness in my feet for years, with no pain. It feels like I had shots of novocain in my feet that never wears off. I have tried everything imaginable with no relief. I recently read that cucumber and aloe lotion may give some relief. I ordered the cream and will see what happens. Should anyone have any solutions of relieving numbness, please let me know. Thanks
@dzam0621 Same here. Went to 2 well known and respected neurosurgeons, both refused to do any operation. In fact, the second surgeon asked me to promise him that I would never let anyone operate on the basis of reducing the neuropathy. I normally get a second opinion on major medical issues and agreed with the second surgeon, in my case, no surgery.

3 Reactions@njed do you actually have numbness or maybe just a tightening but can still feel the floor or anything you step on? I actually have just what feels like tightness around my feet, like someone wrapped something tight around my foot but I can still feel cold or hot or anything I step on. It started on my foot but it’s now slowly creeping up to my calves and leg.

1 ReactionI also have the tight feeling as thought my foot is 5x’s its size and being wrapped up, I have poor circulation, feet discolored, cold, stabbing feeling and on and on. Have had back surgery in past for discs, injections for pain. I hope someone finds that miracle cure and we can all benefit because of connect Mayo.
@panda2ac I have described it in different ways not even clear to me at times. I'll start with what was and now state what is. At first, pins and needles, tingling in toes and side of feet. As time moved on, it went into numbness and a tight sock or tight boot feeling to ankles. Electrical shocks in both legs for about 7 years, that has subsided. All along, numbness got worse and after a few years, developed bilateral drop foot. If I get a stone in my sneaks, it hurts so deep feeling exists. Now....still no pain, tight boot feeling, cool feet and lower legs (on and off), poor balance, best description I tell friends is it feels like your foot fell asleep except it doesn't wake up. Hope this is helpful. Ed
