Chemo and hormone therapy - effects on thyroid

Posted by canadaanne @canadaanne, May 14 7:46pm

My husband is responding well to triple therapy for his stage 4 prostate cancer. 5 of 6 rounds of chemo done!

Before this last round, they also checked his thyroid as it hadn’t been done since before the first round. He has hypothyroidism and has been on meds for that for years now. His numbers for that jumped and they have adjusted his thyroid medication.

This last round he was prescribed a non-steroidal anti inflammatory to help with the pain the first 7 days after treatment and it’s helped a lot. Apparently it can affect thyroid meds, but his numbers had changed before starting that.

I wonder if this could account for some of the fatigue in addition to what would be from the chemo? Anyone else?

@canadaanne, I'm following up on this question that you posed. Unfortunately, I don't have experience or evidence to help answer your question about hypothyroidism being affected by prostate cancer treatments. It doesn't surprise me that ADT and chemo would affect his numbers though.

Have you been able to discuss with his medical oncologist and his endocrinologist? Do they work together to help manage his levels? How are the thryoid numbers these days?
