After effects of heavy antibiotics

Posted by bborth @bborth, Oct 4, 2019

Just curious if anyone out there has had side effects that linger after stopping antibiotics. I had Roux En Y surgery a month ago, and it went as planned until I came down with an infection 9 days later. This landed me back in the hospital for 3 nights as they started me on both Cipro and Flagyl. My fever and white blood count came down thankfully, and they of course wanted me to be on what I learned were high doses of both antibiotics for 10 days. I stopped the medication 5 days ago, but really feel some after effects......balance is off, cognitive issues, brain fog, and lethargy. It seems that these medications can eventually affect the central nervous system and do some nasty things. This is a different feeling that the post surgery malaise I had. Starting to worry about this aspect of the recovery now. Would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Holy cow what an ordeal. Thanks for the info. Your attitude will really help. So true re it takes time after suffering such multiple trauma & med reactions. Have experienced 4 months diarreah following E-Coli meds. 5days injections at hospital & 10days oral antibiotics.
You had a lot more going on and are here helping inform others. Bravo, thank you & all the best. ♡☆♡

@ellesea01 It it seems like it's not stopping. I've been burning down there vulva. Just went back to my gynecologist and apparently what I have is vaginitis DNA probe which is an infection caused by too much antibiotics. So now I'm on creams and hopefully that will resolve it. I thought the antibiotics would have left my system but I still can feel a little foggy in my head .
When I get out of the hospital I had green diarrhea. It actually burned the skin off my butt. Well a month of antibiotics took care of that but now the after effects is now in the front of me. Been going to physical therapy a week and a half ago. It was really bad and last week when I went I have gotten better. Still a little off balance. Head is still a little foggy and everyone thought I had a stroke but I knew it was the antibiotics. Everything takes time
Now I've got to tell you 2 years ago my husband had that listeria bore his head bologna and he was in pretty bad shape. He had e coli but his was much much worse. He had drains coming out of them and then he had to get 13 in of his intestines that were rather removed and he had to wear a colostomy bag for about 3 months. And this was back in 2024 and he's still getting the the diarrhea. Now. The one thing that his GI doctor gave him that will help you
Powdered orange flavor
Cholestyramine for oral suspension USP.
It's an orange drink that stops the diarrhea and it's been actually helping him because he's been having the diarrhea for about 2 years now and with a burning butt. But with this drink it has helped him and when I was giving the diarrhea he gave me a couple pouches to drink and it stopped my diarrhea. Ask your doctor for this
Good luck
Bonnie

Appreciate your reply and info about the drink helping. Never heard of it so gonna check it out. Thank you. Mine went away after the 4 months. But yes, for sure those meds can affect us differently. The "Ugh" part is easy to understand.

Omg, what your husband endures/d? Hoping he's now recovered. And your strong reactions in such sensitive areas too. Yes, I getcha & brutal. Holy ouch. Feel for ya's.

One thing you both might find useful is applying a little pure coconut oil. If in the fridge it sets till its applied. But its a natural antibacterial & has soothing qualities. I've used it for many years anywhere with medium relief. Very gentle & good for the skin and body tissues. Çan help calm hurty bits.
You two keep on helping each other & chk in here too when you can. Hope healing methods find you both. Ciao for now. ♡☆♡☆♡

@ellesea01 yes I use coconut oil and caster oil both organics. When my husband gets and spasms in anus, I had told him to put some castor oil on his finger and put it up there and it immediately stops at they're hard to open. Thanks. I will use it.

I remember about the 50 years ago. My brother had this book by Edgar Casey, the sleeping prophet and now there's an institute in Virginia and he talks about castor oil. So for many years with my knee I've been getting a piece of flannel and soaking it in castor oil then wrapping it around my knee and then wrapping it with Saran and the the pain actually goes away and so does the swelling. But now I see Amazon has caught on to it. They sell castor oil patches. It looks like a big Band-Aid and you just put castor oil in the center and then can put it anywhere on your body. So I am glad that Amazon is finally with it

I made the entire family Amish amoxicillin. It's called. Organic raw unfiltered honey with organic turmeric, garlic, and ginger. And the one thing I learned while I was making it is that the metal of the top of the jar cannot touch the honey. Because anytime metal touches the honey it reduces the honeys medicinal properties. So I put parchment paper be between the glass and the top and then whenever someone doesn't feel good they just take a spoonful of it or else make a cup of hot honey tea. Actually it works fantastic

Many years ago I suffered from a burst intestine while in hospital. Was rushed into emergency surgery, cut me from sternum to groin, removed all insides, flushed me out, and was in ICU for several days on extremely heavy antibiotics.Prior to this emergency, I was extremely active, positive, motivated, and lived a full, exciting, adventurous life. After this procedure, I lost my usual energy levels, motivation, zest for adventure and life. It has never returned, I am not "myself" as I know I used to be, and as everyone knew me to be. I believe the antibiotics destroyed my gut biome, and I've never been able to get that same biome back again, despite taking many pro and pre biotics etc.I recently discovered an alternative drug to Ritalin called Vyvanse, and when I take it, I am back to my old self, got energy, drive, motivation, positive outlook, focus etc, and life is as good as it was pre my emergency surgery.Has anyone else experienced permanent personality/mood/motivation problems etc following heavy life-saving antibiotic treatment?
