I don't remember all the specifics of my taper. I cut the pills in as many pieces as I could and decreased my dose every 2-4 weeks. I've been lucky and never had a problem getting off medication because I believe how slowly I tapered. Many people recommend the 5-10% taper.

@jakedduck1 I appreciate your response. My PCP tells me not to get off my 1mg in the morning and one at night because I don’t drink and exercise 6 out of 7 days a week.
I hear these horror stories of people taking two years to get off the drug and at 75 she thinks there is no reason to go through that. I have been taking the same dosage for 30 years.
That being said if there was a way to do it easier I wouldn’t mind doing it because being a controlled substance it has to be renewed monthly and it is a hassle.
It sounds like you were able to do it relatively easily. How much were you taking and how long had you been taking it?
I look forward to your response.
Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend.

Would you share which one you were on? I am on clonazepam which is really strong, and I notice a big difference if I don't cut my .5 tab in half equally.

@gunshy I became addicted to Xanax, which is a similar drug. I discovered a British psychiatrist famous for successfully weaning her clients of Benzos by slowly replacing them with Valium, also a Benzo but easier to come off of. I told my doctor of this and that's what I was able to do over about 6 months.

Dear David,
Thank you for your reply. I've been taking .5 daily of Kolonpin and I wonder what that computes to in the amount you started from and thus how long it will take me?
I am thinking this method would be the best for me as weighing measuring is too much for me.
Today I cut a .5 in two unequal pieces, took the smaller one this morning and am really, really paying for it in shakes, nausea, weakness and extreme exhaustion.
Congratulations on getting off them!!! And thanks for your reply!

Yes. I am on .5 tab of clonazepam and feeling terrible. I just asked the doctor if they made .25 so that would not happen again. I am shakey, weak, tired, have diarehia and sick to my stomach. Is there any thing I can do if this happens again?

If my memory is correct (but I wouldn't bet the farm on it) I took three 2 mg tabs three times a day so 6 mg morning noon & night. I used the brand name Klonopin, my neurologist didn't believe in seizure patients taking generics.

Hi Lacy,
Thank you for your reply. What benzo were you on and how did you do your taper.
I applaud your courage and persistence. So glad to hear you are off them. I know what break through withdrawal is like when I was on lorzapam and they were excruciating. Now I am on kolonpin and feel nausous and weak most of the time.

@gunshy .....went from 3/4 pill to half to crumbs but over many months over a year... but had few years cold turkey with zoloft, twice.... its a long story .. no one questined why i was still taking them after over a decade but as soon as i had no dr and tried to continue them was called a drug seeker.. one of the reasons i got off them.. never to let that happen to me again.. and the zoloft was due to diagnosis of normal tension glaucoma and narrow angles... they said i shouldnt take as increase eye pressute and stupid me thought i should stop right away... etc etc.... am glad am off them but often wonder wht it would have been like had i stayed on as i was more "stable" .. but am old now and so many issues! Take care and I would suggest getting the help of at least your pharmacist to quit or sodcial worker jmho

@gunshy So sorry you are suffering. I was on Xanax no longer than about a year. I have been on antidepressants for about 35 years and that may have made it easier to get off of benzos. My experience in the last couple years includes taking CBD oil (pot without THC so I don't get high, but helps calm my nervous system. I take Alprazolam .5 milligram once or twice a week when I feel ungrounded. I am 80 yrs old but my new PCP trusts that I won't abuse the Xanax. I purchased a natural anti-anxiety product and am waiting for it to arrive. Natural products of this type usually take several weeks to make a difference. I will give it a try. If I were you I would taper off your med at a much slower rate. Keep your suffering to a minimum.

Hope your natural remedy works. I've tried lavender pills, but they don't work for me. I use lavender and camomile drops at night when I wake up at night and feel edgy
I'm still up in the air about the best way to taper off. Almost all require a change that could play more havoc with my nervous system. I found a lady in NYC who does functional medicine -- works to get one stable first before the taper, but I am sure she is asking big bucks.
At 5 percent reduction I am looking at at least two years... wowiee!!! I am 81 and want to around longer and get my life back!
