Seroquel withdrawal or rebound anxiety?

Posted by EK326 @emkaf, Apr 26, 2023

I am 28 year old female with generalized anxiety and moderate depression. After some mixed issues with SSRI treatment, my doctor put me on Seroquel as an off-label usage for anxiety. We had gotten up to 150mg, but I still wasn't feeling that great and have never been very comfortable with the idea of being on seroquel for my specific issues. Over the past few months, I've tapered down from 150 to 0 (I've also been going up on Viibryd which is a newer SSRI).

Since I fully dropped off the seroquel 4 weeks ago, I've been struggling a lot with very physical symptoms. My body feels like it is buzzing, vibrating, electric. My heart is pounding very strong throughout my body (though my heart rate is normal). This week, I started having really really bad physical anxiety and sheer panic attacks in a way that I have never had before.

I feel like these symptoms are withdrawal from the seroquel, though I am surprised they have lasted this long and that there isn't a specific pattern of improvement (some days are okay, some days are worse, etc). My psych things I'm having rebound anxiety, but what's weird is this is NOT how anxiety used to feel to me before I started seroquel. This is a new set of symptoms and issues, so it's hard for me to believe that.

Has anyone had experience coming off seroquel for anxiety? How long did your withdrawal last?

cinrose - Thank you for replying to her about your klonopin withdrawal. She is not alone and I stopped klonopin cold turkey after 7 months because I noticed tremors, body buzzing while on it so assumed it was thje drug. I am now off for not quite 2 months and I am still experiencing some buzzing from time to time, although not as bad as it was. I read these protracted withdrawal symptoms can last for up to 12 months? Can you tell me how long you've been off your klonopin now, what dosage you took, and what minor symptoms your still having. I am now set to see a neurologist (my request as my doc doesn't understand) but maybe I'm just wasting my and his time? Thanks for any insight.

Hello. I only took .75 mg a day of Klonopin for 3 mo. so a really small amount! Such an awful drug! It seemed to actually make my anxiety worse especially right before I needed the next dose. I have been off of it 3 months now and I still have a few bad days a week so... I had a sort of buzzing in my skull when I was taking the Klonopin however, and I rarely experience it any more. It can’t hurt to see a neurologist but most likely it is the remants of the Klonopin. Best of luck to you. Stay strong. Things will improve but it does take a long time and a lot of patience from what I have read. Addiction can happen in as little as three weeks so you are probably just in withdrawal still.

Thank you so much for replying. I actually was only taking .5mg for 7 months but noticed body tremors after 4 to 6 weeks of being on the drug. Then the daytime body buzzing started in along with major eye nerve twiching which I could not see happening when looking in the mirror. Went to opthamologist and he said my eyes were perfect for guy of 65 in particular. The eye stuff stopped after discontinuing drug. Tremors seemed to mostly disappear but body buzzing still there from time to time although better than it was a month ago. I've been very healthy my entire life so this threw me for a loop. Sleep doc prescribed it for sleep disorder and my regular doc was not happy when I mentioned it to him. Neither doc understood the tremors although regular doc said it could be a result of that nasty benzo. A larger dose would have put me in a wheelchair I'm sure as it was doing a number on my central nervous system. Best to you!

Believe me, I feel for you! I am in your age group and this was prescribed to me also for sleeping issues. Hopefully with time we can both get back to normal. Don’t know why they prescribe Klonopin without telling the patient all possible side effects not to mention the extreme difficulty to quit. It makes me very angry. I was also fairly healthy before all this.

Thats exactly how I feel, angry at my sleep doc for prescribing this and not discussing possibile side effects, although he didn't think tremors were from drug when i brought it up. I found it's a potential side effect when researching. My regular doc (a young guy) looked at me and said my sleep doc must be an older guy if he was still prescribing this med. I laughed and said, yes, he's as old as me or older. He was spot on. I will never step foot in his office again and frankly want to write him a nasty letter telling him what he's doing to people. It's just not right. I have 3 docs in my family, all young nephews and a niece and two nephews told me a while back to be your own advocate when it comes to your health as medical malpractice is quite common. One of them told me it's frightening what he's seen. My nephews both practiced at Johns Hopkins so they are very bright and I respect what they say, although neither knows of my klonopin issue, lol.

That’s impressive. Well good luck again! I don’t know about you but I learned my lesson. You’re better off just suffering through your uncomfortableness! It’s much easier than dealing with those side effects.

Hey there,
Although I have never been on Seroquel, I am currently withdrawing from Effexor. I have all the same symptoms you described. The sheer panic attacks out of nowhere, very fast and sudden heartbeat, diarrhea (tmi), and horrible fatigue. My psychiatrist told me that I am returning to my original condition as well, but my anxiety was never this bad before! I have read similar stories to ours, and I genuinely believe that these are all withdrawal symptoms. The “returning anxiety” excuse is not good enough for me because how are we all having the same exact symptoms? I have never had such intense panic attacks and my emotions are all over the place as well.

Hi graciepeanut, I’m so sorry to hear you are going through this too. I’ve heard that Effexor can be very difficult to taper down on. I am thinking of you and wishing you the best during this time. These psych meds are intense, and unfortunately doctors don’t fully disclose the side effects and challenges of coming off the meds. However I firmly believe that all of us can and will find the right mix of meds that will lead to a positive and happy life ❤️ please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need someone to lean on right now!

I’m on 150 mg of. Seroquel at bedtime and 50mg in the morning and I don’t know what thir doing because I still feel awful.
They put me on klonopin as well. Klonopin has severe withdrawal symptoms that could take up to a year to gradually taper off. It should be taken off the market. It’s awful to get off of. Benzodiazepines are something to stay off of unless you feel they will save your life.

I speak from experience. I recently was admitted to a hospital for 10 days on an unrelated issue but my med list I gave to the triage nurse got lost so they used a 3 year old list from their computer. I wasn’t on klonopin then so they wouldn’t give it to me. It was hellish. I resumed klonopin once I got home and within an hour my symptoms stopped.

Same with Seroquel. I would go nuts without it. Too many dangerous medications out there.

@andytheman seroquel withdrawal is just as bad and can be worse than benzo withdrawal! If you taper benzo all the way down jumping off is usually ok, not seroquel! And at least BENZOS FEEL GOOD AND WORK! Seroquel is gross unless someone is psychotic

My psychiatrist said that I should take Seroquel 300 mg at bedtime. A month later I told him I was too sedated so he lowered it to 200 mg at bedtime.
After a while it was again too sedating so he went down to 100 mg.

At 100 mg I started feeling the anxiety so he upped it to 125 mg which is what I’m on now. I can’t go any lower as I was told not to take it at all one night because my BP was up to 76/47 and he said that if I took it I could not wake up in the morning.

So I stopped it cold turkey because I feared not waking up in the morning because of B/P bottoming out. After a few hours I developed a full blown panic attack that I ended up in the ER.

I had only gone 4 hours without it before the panic attack drove me nuts. I thought I was going to die. I later learned that stopping Seroquel cold turkey could kill you. Literally.

Once I was discharged and got home I was too late to take a Seroquel and stayed up the rest of the night.
The next morning my dose of klonopin eased up my anxiety and I was again , becoming sedated. Anxiety slowly subsided. Seroquel was prescribed to me as a sleep aid as I am not psychotic. Aren’t there any better sleeping pills out there? Seems like Benadryl, a much safer alternative to Seroquel, would have helped me sleep better and safer. Especially since I have sinus allergies. It would serve 2 problems.

@chrislever I feel the same way. I have been taking 25 mg at night for sleeping for a very long time and the last three nights I've only taken half tablets and last night fell asleep without it. This morning I woke up with severe anxiety and feeling almost psychotic. It's a terrible feeling and I should not have lowered my dose. I didn't consult my doctor I just wanted to see if I feel better and not as tired throughout the day. Having panic disorder and having it for such a long time, it's so debilitating even with all the medications it's hard to deal with.
