Clindamycin caused Tendonitis
Has anyone else experienced Tendonitis caused by the antibiotic Clindamycin?
I was prescribed Clindamycin HCI 150mg cap; 3 capsules every 8 hours for one week.
After taking it as directed for 6 days, I experienced intense joint and body pain, and bad tendinitis, also headache.
I awoke in the night feeling like every fiber of every muscle and tendon and ligament in my body was on fire, was like I could feel all fibers with fire running down them; joint pain intense, tendon pain intense.
It was better by morning, but was still in deep pain. I have residual weakness, tiredness, joint pain (more than usual arthritis pain) and tendonitis pain, headache, with occasional attacks nausea (but no vomiting).
This is not getting better yet and I stopped taking them a week ago.

Yes, to the joint swelling. In addition to the arthritis I already have, this added to it. It's awful. One of the things the Clindamycin can cause is mono or poly arthritis. I got the poly (multiple joints)and it sounds like you do, too. my sympathy and commiseration. There's no warning about any of this with Clindamycin, and I think there should be, Only the FDA can mandate that, though - so they need to hear from anyone who's suffering these side effects.
I called the prescribing doctor(not his fault, you know - he did what he had to do to protect my bionic parts and there's no warning about those side effects) and told his nurse about it, she said they'd put on my list of allergies, I suggested(requested) the doc report it but all she would say is they'd put it on my allergy list. ugh. so I went ahead and reported it.
Can you get or make bone broth? the collagen in that (particularly beef) is helpful.
I read that taking zinc and vitamin C with the collagen aids in absorption, too. So I take a daily vitamin with the morning collagen peptides, and a supplement with the supper one. I found one brand that actually includes that in their formula -cool, huh?
I didn't notice much improvement at all at 10 grams but did at 20, so now I made that my dosage and sometimes take 30 but not all at once, I take 20 in the morning and 10 in the evening. It mixes well into a protein shake or smoothie, iced coffee, yogurt, or cottage cheese.
I worry about the muscle loss with reduced movement, too - and my stamina is not good now. So it's gonna be a long work back, but when I am able, will do it. PT is not for now with fragile tendons is my thought.
I'm just so tired of hurting all the time and am exhausted easily. At least the pain isn't as bad as it was. You are SO right about the overdoing, and it doesn't take much.
I see my primary physician next week for my regular appointment and will fill her in... I didn't see any sense before because I didn't figure there was anything she could do.
I didn't know that about floxed and ibuprofen, thank you for that info (not floxed). I'm the same way about any new medications now.
Keep your head up and stay as positive as you can. I hope the increased amount of the collagen peptides brings you relief, too. hugs
UPDATE: I just received a letter from MedWatch /FDA. They received my report, and in the letter also stated
that voluntary reports are essential and that
'One or two well-documented reports may provide an early signal of unexpected problems and lead to additional valuation'.
Remember how long it took for the truth about the fluoroquinolones (cipro, levaquin, etc) to come out?
If this antibiotic, Clindamycin, can cause tendon problems, I think it's important to get that studied and warned sooner than later.
So, if anyone has had tendonitis or arthritis caused by Clindamycin, please report it to the FDA so they can log it and get working on that.
You can go to the FDA website and fill out their form (https://www.fda.gov/ and click on 'Report a problem') and then you can print it out and either mail it or fax it.
After completing the MedWatch Form, you can fax it to 800-332-0178 (toll-free) or mail it to:

If you do it, please document everything you experienced or are still experiencing, and that way they can build a record for further investigation.
I'm still having painful and widespread tendonitis, have learned that tendons with damaged collagen fibers are fragile (so no active P.T. yet), and am taking 20-30 grams of collagen peptides every day; it seems that 30 is better for me than 20, and I take 20 in the morning and 10 in the evening. I try to keep pressure off the tendons as much as possible (key word here is 'possible'). I also eat collagen-rich meat(mostly beef) and drink bone broth.
My primary doc and I had a long discussion about it last week and she said it looks like I'm doing the right things for it and also gave me some passive exercises to do as tolerated.
@uisge levaquin almost crippled me! Also bad if you have an aneurysm.
@rockpir - oh my goodness! Did the levaquin cause the aneurysm? Or worsen it? I took several rounds of Levaquin and Cipro many years ago,and have the surgery repair scars to show for it. it truly does cause intense tendon problems.
How're you doing now?

2 ReactionsDon’t really know if had an aneurysm when I took levaquin. Only took it for a short time, but it bothered my knee’s almost immediately.I was 76yrs old and when I researched it was noted about prescribing it for anyone over 65. The aneurysm was diagnosed about 4yrs ago (83yrs) and one of the first things they told me was to stay from levaquin. Now 87 and doing ok.Have a few back problems and I believe sacro joint problems. Still vey active as I have been my whole life. Thanks for the concern!

2 Reactions@rockpir -sad, isn't it. that some of the things medical science develops to help people can and does do so much harm.
The research I did on Clindamycin (all online) shows that the tendon attacks are 'very rare. so rare as to be anecdotal'. I'm finding out that it's not all that rare. It's my fervent hope that the FDA undertakes a study and puts a black box warning on Clindamycin like they finally did for the fluoroquinolones.
@taylor99 - I'm finding that the30 grams of good Collagen Peptides works better for me than 20; I mix 20 grams in my morning smoothie or iced coffee, and 10 in a little carton of yogurt in the evening, and I also drink bone broth and try to eat lots of meat especially beef and with connective tissue in it (like a small roast and I cook it in the slow cooker low and slow). yep, it's expensive.
Still not near back to normal and still i pain, but not as bad as it was and seems to be slowly getting better. still have much exhaustion, though, which is a real drag.
How're you coming along?
