Today is 6 weeks post Prostate removal surgery

Posted by mpersonne @mpersonne, May 18 5:21am

Ive been doing well, and all the incisions have healed nicely. Ive pretty much regained all continence, but still no action below. I had my 3 week post catheter removal visit with my urologist last Thursday, and he said im now good to go back to normal duties and exercise, but take it slowly and listen to your body. The only big issue im having, is that im getting a burning sensation at the end of emptying my bladder. I told the doctor, and they were going to do a culture on my urine sample, but never heard anything back, but he did say if i had UTI, he would call something in for me, but nothing so far. He also said this is the time-frame where the scabs that are formed from the stitching the Uretha to the bladder might be falling off, so the urine that passes by the raw and healing spots are causing the burn. Ive noticed when urinating, it does look like tiny chunks of something, and last two days periodically blood in the urine. Im hoping this passes soon, for this is almost worse than the actually surgery. That burning is no joke!!!!!!! Anyone else had the same issue? And yes, drinking tons of water..

This is a common problem. I know a couple people that had Flomax prescribed to try to prevent the burning. AZO which you can get in the pharmacy without a prescription may help works for some.

It is listed as one of the short term side effects from surgery or radiation.

Call them back about being tested for an infection, Maybe you do have a UTI.

That sounds pretty good to me, I don't know much as I am new to all this. I had surgery on April 30 PM to remove prostate and then they also decided to fix a inguinal hernia that never bother me for the last 30 years. Then at 3AM on May 1 another 3 hour surgery to fix an artery that was leaking. Catheter removal on May 12.

Hope I am doing as good as you in 3 weeks from removal.

I did call them back, and they said no growth in my urine culture, so no UTI. They are asking the doctor for something to help with the burning. I have taken AZO the last two days, and it hasnt done anything for me, except turn my urine orange. Im drinking tons of water to try and dilute my urine, but the more i have to pee, the more suffering with the burning. Its not at the tip, but more at the base. I will see if they call me back with some relief.

I had the "little Chunks" in my urine as well post op, but no burning/ irritation. You are doing the right thing by drinking lots of water. Did you cut your caffeine intake? I dropped mine by half post op and that helped a lot. I also drank so much Gatoraide that I got sick of the stuff. You might try some herbal teas with Cranberries in them or Cranberry juice? That might help a little with the burning?

I’m also at 6 weeks and was wondering how you're doing with incontinence.

@df0403 Im actually doing pretty good. I would say the frist two weeks after the catherter was taken out, the only time i would leak would be when standing up, or taking my first few steps. As of today, I can hold / control everything like normal. Now I still wear pads, for it seems i never get all the urine out after emptying my bladder, for when i think im done, i can give it that little extra push, and i start peeing again, so im being safe for the time being...

@mpersonne
I’ve had a couple of times where I’ve been to the urologist and they’ve measured how much was left in my bladder after peeing. My bladder was empty, they said. I still find within a few minutes I can start leaking. The urine comes back into the bladder pretty quickly.

Well my urologist prescribed me the 200mg of Azo, and started taking it last night. I do feel some improvement, but the burn has gotten better..

Wow, good for you sounds like hardly any incontinence problems. Hopefully next week when I see urologist I can get some answers on incontinence and having urge to pee. During the day, I never really feel the need to pee- unless I get up out of a sitting position and then it's a little late (stress incontinence). I already have peed some and can usually hold it until I get to toilet to finish. If no toilet around I can stop it until next time I get up, but no real feeling of having to go. Feel leakage through the day. Now if laying on couch watching or sleeping at night, I do get urge to pee and can get up with a little stress incontinence and have a normal pee.

So I wonder why I get urge laying down, but not sitting up and moving around. Strange! I go out and walk a mile and can sometimes come back a pee , but still don't have the urge I need to.
