Is shingles contagious

Posted by claunch @claunch, 4 hours ago

My husband is being treated for shingles, noticed them yesterday, and will start today on an antiviral. I take Letrozole and had a hormone positive breast cancer in 2024. I think I have read that, in my situation, I would be somewhat immune compromised. I did not take chemo and had 5 radiation treatments. Am I more likely to get shingles from him? Perhaps take a preventative antiviral. Thank you for any information you may have on this.

It's my understanding that shingles itself is not contagious. However, if you have never had chickenpox before or the vaccine for it, you could potentially get chickenpox from someone with active shingles, because it's the same virus. You would have to be in close contact with the active sores/blisters. If you have already had chickenpox before or have received the vaccine to prevent it, you should be fine.

As far as I know, you should not be immune compromised from letrozole. I have taken it for several years without this effect. I also gather that shingles is not contagious unless someone has never had chicken pox or the vaccine. However, since you have concerns I think your pharmacist can give you good information and set your mind at rest.
