It's my understanding that shingles itself is not contagious. However, if you have never had chickenpox before or the vaccine for it, you could potentially get chickenpox from someone with active shingles, because it's the same virus. You would have to be in close contact with the active sores/blisters. If you have already had chickenpox before or have received the vaccine to prevent it, you should be fine.
