Leiomyosarcoma on left inner thigh: Anyone had Flap Surgery?

Posted by michym3 @michym3, May 4 5:13pm

In late February 2026 a biopsy confirmed I had a grade 2 - 3 Leiomyosarcoma measuring 10 x 7 x 5 cm on my inner left thigh which has required 3 weeks of radiation treatment and surgery is scheduled for June 2026. Up till now has been the easy part and I know I have a long road ahead of me after surgery. My concern is that they have to take skin flaps from my abdomen to replace what is being taken from my leg. Apparently the surgery will take eight hours total for removal of the sarcoma and then for the plastic surgeon to buildup and repair the area. It is difficult enough, having surgery in one area of your body, but to have to recover from 2 areas is not something I had thought about before. I wonder if anyone has been through a similar surgery like this before?

I don’t have any experience with that type of procedure, but I hope it goes well for you. Have you checked to see if there are any available videos on that type of surgery? I like to know what to expect so I look for things like that. Maybe your doctor has an instructional one.

No I haven’t checked for any videos on the surgery yet but that’s a good idea.

In 2022 I had a soft tissue sarcoma discovered in my left calf, I went through 25 rounds of radiation to shrink the tumor and It was surgically removed in December 2022. Once the tumor was removed some reconstruction was required, which a skin graph was taken from my upper left thigh. You are correct you now have two wounds to heal. The skin graph area healed amazingly quick by keeping it dry with a hair dryer on cool setting.
I now have a recurrence in that same area and may have to deal with that same procedure again, I go back to Mayo for additional testing next week. Good luck to you!!

I’m sorry to hear you have a recurrence in the same area especially after all the radiation which is supposed to help give margins so surgeons get all the cancer when removing. I have been taking steps to help my body for surgery and hopefully avoid the cancer from spreading as well. It’s hard enough going through the process one time, no one wants to do it ever again. All the best to you.
