Osteonecrosis of the jaw

Posted by sandy03 @sandy03, May 8 10:51am

I am a 79 year old female and was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my sixties. I had taken Forteo for 2 years and then Reclast infusions for 4 years. Then several years later I started Prolia. I talked to several doctors and they felt I needed to start on another drug. I had been on Prolia for 2 years when I was diagnosed last year with Osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Has anyone else been diagnosed with this condition? I have been told by my doctor that I can not take anymore bisphosphonates.

@scpartain I'm sorry to hear that! Did the ONJ ever resolve?

@soggybones Fortunately it did with conservative treatment. The dead bone ejected spontaneously while the oral surgeon was examining the area. After that happened, the gum closed up and the infection healed. I count myself very lucky.
