Neuropathy and natural supplements such as magnesium and alpha acid
First off, I want to say if I didn’t have this Mayo Clinic website I would have lost it. Thank you for all the advise and caring you give.
Second, I would like to ask if anyone has had great results from taking alpha lipoid acid and magnesium ? I’m a soon to be a 67 year old female that neuropathy hit 3 years ago. It’s a nightmare at times. I have known people with Cancer that live normal lives now, which I’m very thankful for, it seems neuropathy just goes on, no matter. You can try to do the things you used to do but sometimes it is to no avail as it’s hard to even get out of bed in the morning because of pain. I also have the pchological problem of being so reliant on my husband when I have been independent , worked out, loved to cook, now it’s hard to stand, only short periods of time. I think I am over Dr.s, it’s like chasing the wind.
My question is, has anyone tried the alpha lopic acid along with magnesium ? How many milligrams is safe for a medium size woman and what is the best brand for both of these. Dr.s will poo poo this as they want to push the drugs, I’ve been prescribed everything and couldn’t tolerate Cymbalta, I almost scratched myself to the bone. I have been on steroids several times, it can destroy every part of your body, not sure why that is not realized. I want to finally try something natural, if anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.
Thank you, Judy

@mrmacabre Sad indeed. I searched Google for reasons. Mainly stomach acid and lining.
We must be our own advocates in a bureaucratic, money-driven health care system. Try to look for those who treat patients holistically. I am taking ALA at 600 mg per day and two 240mg magnesium tablets at night. Both are helpful-I find the magnesium helps my muscles relax and I can usually get a better night's sleep from them. Neuropathy is driven by so many variables including weather--the real cold winter we had in NYC adversely affected it. Now allergies may also be a factor. Day to day adjustments may be needed. I also had a shave biopsy surgery that caused my neuropathy to flare. I hope that you will also consider gentle nerve-gliding exercises. I do them on daily basis and it seems to help--very calmative and strengthening at same time. Wishing you the best-just keep trying and you will find something that works for you.

1 Reaction@jamessaxo I eat red meat but not often. I eat salmon and other fish much more often. I take, among many other OTC supplements, 1000Mg of Vitamin B12 daily. And, I do have neuropathy. I have not heard of Methylcobalamin until now. When adding that to one's list, what do physicians usually suggest you start with on a daily basis? Also, when adding Methylcobalamin to one's diet, do you then stop the daily intake of B-12 supplements?
@mikeas. METHYLCOBALAMIN is one of 3 types of b12. Older stomachs have less acid from which B12 is extracted. Many older stomach linings have worn down villi. You can get the whole picture off the Internet.
Good luck.
