Neuropathy and natural supplements such as magnesium and alpha acid
First off, I want to say if I didn’t have this Mayo Clinic website I would have lost it. Thank you for all the advise and caring you give.
Second, I would like to ask if anyone has had great results from taking alpha lipoid acid and magnesium ? I’m a soon to be a 67 year old female that neuropathy hit 3 years ago. It’s a nightmare at times. I have known people with Cancer that live normal lives now, which I’m very thankful for, it seems neuropathy just goes on, no matter. You can try to do the things you used to do but sometimes it is to no avail as it’s hard to even get out of bed in the morning because of pain. I also have the pchological problem of being so reliant on my husband when I have been independent , worked out, loved to cook, now it’s hard to stand, only short periods of time. I think I am over Dr.s, it’s like chasing the wind.
My question is, has anyone tried the alpha lopic acid along with magnesium ? How many milligrams is safe for a medium size woman and what is the best brand for both of these. Dr.s will poo poo this as they want to push the drugs, I’ve been prescribed everything and couldn’t tolerate Cymbalta, I almost scratched myself to the bone. I have been on steroids several times, it can destroy every part of your body, not sure why that is not realized. I want to finally try something natural, if anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.
Thank you, Judy

@faybe Thank you! Yes, I had taken ALA a few years back and stopped when my stomach protested pretty seriously. I was taking 1800mg a day, which was what I had read was required to get benefit. Your input is encouraging me to restart it, as it would be wonderful to relieve the burning sensation.
Funny isn't it, how can your feet be burning and feel numb at the same time??
@johnjp I found this ALEVIA on the internet watched the complete video and have not tried it. Have you tried it and if so what do you think??? It sounds good, but I have watched so many of these video's for a cure for Neuropathy and lots of them are people we all know and I'm sure this is AI at it's best!!!!!
@johnjp It sure is strange about your feet can feel numb but still burn like you on walking on hot coals. Good luck I hope you get better. I have been taking ALA for 2 years and I have never taken over 1200mg a day. please don't forget to eat before or after and anytime your stomach burns, EAT lol
I have been taking Alpha Lipoid Acid for about 2 years and if it burns my stomach, I eat something. It has truly helped my feet and it is cheaper than a lot of other remedies. I take 600mg in the morning and 600mg at night. I started out taking 300mg, but had to go up to 600mg. you can take the magnesium seperate from the ALA. Good luck
@doctordeuce Right?? No, I haven’t tried it. I’m mulling it over. But it sure sounds promising. I did a quick search on “Amla” and found several sources, some quite a bit better priced than that one. Before I buy I’ll seek out the “independently tested” versions. Definitely want to get the best potency, best bio-available, fewest other ingredients version. I was hoping someone would have tried it.
Hi Judy,
Sorry to hear how much pain you have suffered. I’m taking ALA 1200 mg under doctors care for 8 months showing relief. If I have a flare up not often I take 600mg more. Dr. Adviced to take ALA on empty stomach.. I do 1st thing in AM.
Also use rub magnesium oil as needed. 🍀prv
@iris623g There is a lot of information on the web advising that "R Alpha Lipid Acid" is the form which is bioavailable. The "Alpha Lipid Acid" contains both the R form and S form in approximate equal proportion. The S form has very questionable bioavailability if at all.
The R form is much more expensive but is the form that works.

1 Reaction@mrmacabre It may ease pain but won't repair your nerves missing myelin. That's what nerve insulation is called. The only way to fix a nerves missing insulation is to take plenty of vitamin B12. Yes B12 makes myelin.
And alcohol really does inhibit B12 absorbtion. All info re neuropathy is freely available on Google.
@jamessaxo I've been taking a vitamin B complex supplement for several years now, and I've never consumed alcohol. Yet I still have had neuropathy for 10+ years, lucky me.
@doctordeuce Please let me know what more information you find on ALEVIA!!! I'm very interested!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
