Hair loss after chemo

Posted by mjmac @mjmac, Jun 7, 2025

Hello,
I just finished my 2nd round of chemo and am extremely thankful that I am not sick. I was aware that my hair would fall out but now that it’s happening I feel unprepared. I’ve bought scarves and looked at wigs but still feel …. hmmmm sad.
I am wondering if any of you have any tips on how I should care for my soon to be bald head. Thanks in advance, I’m so glad this site is here. 💞

Hi Lynn,
Sorry I just read this. Thank you for all the information! I found the scarves on Amazon. I too live in a hot climate so natural fabric is a must through the summer.
I just finished chemo 4 and the next drug on my chemo regime (12 weeks) will cause minimal or no further hair loss. So far I still have brows & lashes thank goodness, chemo nurse said if they wern't gone by now they probably won't go. That's one win however small, we take them when we get them.
Take care and stay strong and good luck in your journey as well.
MJ

Right on schedule I lost my hair week 3 after 1st infusion. I live in Arizona and we're going into summer. I found on Amazon bamboo fabric light weight baseball style caps. Love them. I also bought 2 wigs, but hot and heavy. Not having hair, I look 20 years older, I hate it! But.......at least I don't go out often. Blessings to you!

I've bought several turbans from this site.https://www.headcovers.com/headwear/ Also have a few wigs, which need to be washed on a regular basis. It's a pain, and they're hot in the summer. The best ones are those that are 100% hand-tied monofilament wigs, lace fronts, and silicone-lined medical wigs. Top brands like Raquel Welch and Jon Renau. These are expensive but you'll feel more confident wearing them rather than the cheaper ones;)

I ordered a couple of wigs - just for work calls. Normally wore baseball caps with hair that I ordered off Amazon. My hair person came over and shaved my head after 2 chemo treatments. We cheered with prosecco! I got comfortable with wearing no hair- my kids, significant other, care team and friends supported me. It did get a little funny if I would meet friends out as they never knew if I would have a hat/with hair, a wig or just be bald - haha!!

No one wants to be bald after having a full head of hair, but it was kind of fun experimenting. My favorite was what I called "bangs on a stick." It was a wire piece with just bangs on it and it fit over your head like a head band. Then you could put a scarf on or a baseball cap or any type of hat you wanted. I had bangs before my hair fell out, so it was just natural for me and kind of fun. I didn't like wigs too much, but had one "pixie" that I wore on occasion. The bangs were my favorite.

I list all of my hair and at times it got very sore. I used coconut oil and that was the only thing to relieve it. I felt the worst of it all was in losing my hair. I had a very small amount left at my bang area and side burn area that I used to pull out of my cute hats with a flower of the same material as my cotton hats . (In every color to match my clothes. (Amazon)It really helped to make me feel a little cuter. Everyone else I know shaved there head so didn’t have those whisps of hair I was left with. Afterwards I use gummies from Pinkstork called Total Glow Gummies. I take one a day and my hair is longer and fuller than it was before my cancer. I also use shampoo and conditioner that makes it fuller as it tends to go flat without it. I hope all this helps you as for me losing the hair was the worst oart, other than the diagnosis.

When my hair came back it was the nicest I'd had since I was a child in my 79 years of life. It was thick and curly. I sure missed it when it was gone afetr a few haircuts. I hated the wigs. They look so fake because there is too much hair.
