Ostomy Odor Concerns

Posted by pidge32 @pidge32, May 9 8:34am

I have a one piece enclosed Ostomy Bag but I still seem to get a whiff of an order from the area
I know everything is enclosed but I swear I get an odor
Has anyone else experienced this type of concern.
I’m afraid if I can smell it someone else can.
Thank You

@pidge32 I swore I smelled my ostomy when I first got it. So I had my husband "sniff check" me on a regular basis.

He said he could not smell anything. When I have seen an ostomy nurse and also asked her, she claims to not be able to smell anything.

Do you have anyone would be willing to "sniff check" you and set your mind at ease?

@susanf8 unfortunately my husband has no sense of smell. I’ll have to ask a friend, it’s just not all of the time.
Thank you

@susanf8 sometimes I smell mine also so I put a round sticker the company sent me with my ostomy products but it causes air to fill up and that can be a problem

Every now and then I do get a slight odor and I seem to think its more like passing gas than the actual stool itself cause it never stays

I have a continent ileostomy and I know it smells when I empty it. I take Devrom chewable tablets which are an internal deodorant. They are a game changer! I would start out taking one after each meal then see if you can back down… . Google devrom… look around for the cheapest price.

It seems as if all the major medical firms carry deodorants for just that purpose: Coloplast, Convatec and Hollister plus others. Why not try one or more of these?

@piki I have the Coloplast. It doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

@pidge32 I found the Hollister M9 drops to help.

If you have a friend who you can ask to "sniff check" (since your husband doesn't have much of a sense of smell), that might help confirm your impression. Or lay it to rest.

We have changed to a Coloplast bag with a filter. It seems like it has taken care of the problem 🤞🏻
Now if there is someway to stop it from backing up around the stoma that would be great. I do try to rinse it out with warm water but it still backs up.
