Fat grafting for swallowing and speech issues caused by radiation?

Posted by taylorma @taylorma, May 4 8:06am

I’m a 16 year tonsil cancer survivor, but I had stage IV and got hit with high dose of radiation and have been dealing with side effects. I’m completely dependent on feeding tube to get my nutrition, my right side of my neck is very stiff and tight, I have radiation induced brachial plexopathy to the point I can’t use my right arm. It was mentioned on this chat group about fat grafting for radiation fibrosis in the neck, so i started asking specific questions about my conditions and how fat grafting could help and he showed some very positive information. My question is does anybody have any knowledge about fat grafting for swallowing, speech issues caused by radiation.

Good-morning, I'm in the same boat as you. I never heard of this "Fat grafting" I will be checking into it thanks for the info. It's been awhile since I post something, been having a lot of issue. My speech therapist wants me to check out therapeutic massage...ideally someone "Certified in Craniosacral Massages" with my nerve damage and other issue not being able to eat/ swallowing, I found a couple that look promising. I'm also relying on the feeding tube now. May I also say "please" get a second opinion on what's going on. The reason why I'm saying this is I went to my ENT doctor in town, instead seen his PA (physician assistant) ...after the visit i felt somewhat confused of what he was saying. Anyway I got a call on Sunday and it's my ENT (pa) doctor, I'm thinking why is he calling me on a weekend??? He went on letting us know there's nothing he can do etc. My hubby told him, okay we understand and thank him for calling. After that I started looking for a second opinion out of town. (just that little voice talking to you Lol ) Guys I was so happy I did 🙂 I got more information from the new ENT doc. (both doctor scope me) I'm attaching his findings... My speech therapist underling parts that's going to help me the most, she was so overwhelmed with happiness. I'm pray this could help someone if your confused. We're all have different journey, “But” at the same time we're on the same journey to help each other. God Bless

I don't believe I am a candidate for fat grafting as I don't have much fat to transfer, plus it requires surgery. But thank you for your information and comment. Take care!

I’m not sure I’m a candidate either, my speech therapist cautioned me not to get my hopes up because my condition is more muscular and nerve than neurological, but were I’m at I felt it was worth having a consultation to determine if anything can be done to improve my quality of life even if it’s only 10% better. It is so frustrating to hear there are no options for my condition. I have tried everything, but I will never quit searching that why I love this site (Mayo Connect) I wish i knew about this site in 2010 or somebody would have encouraged this during my treatment.

@taylorma .
