Chronic Phlegm Collecting in my throat, I constantly have to swallow
I had a bad case of what the doctors said was bronchitis March 2025, almost a year ago, and as of Jan 2026, I am still dealing with mucus in my throat. Although they did say that without a scope, they could not be sure. It is best described as a sticky mess right where I swallow and constantly has to be cleared, but rarely is any mucus produced up, just swallowed. Here is the timeline. In March 2025 the sore throat started and then a cough. After about a week, I went to the clinic and they said it was going around. The cough became worse and it became really bad and constant. After several more trips to the clinic and a chest x-ray, (unremarkable), we tried some different meds with no results. After about two months I improved, but still had an occasional cough and just lived with it. In Nov 2025 the phlegm in my throat became worse so I went several more times to the clinic. They had me go two weeks off of Lisinopril, then Prilosec for two months, and Mucinex for a week with no change. I can't describe it as a cough anymore, just having to clear the mucus from my throat where I swallow very often durning the day. It feels like a sticky mess right where I swallow.

I am looking for ideas and others that have had this. Thanks.

I had sinus/deviated septum surgery in 2014. Ever since then I have suffered with uncontrollable mucus. I am unable to blow my nose to clear my sinuses. I can only hack/cough--very horrible for others around me. I spend 30+ minutes each morning/night trying to clear my head/sinuses so I can sleep. I wake during the night to clear out drainage--poor hubby hears me and kind enough to tolerate it. ENT advises to not use meds that dry the sinuses. I only use saline and occasionally an Alkalol nasal rinse. I am 83. I guess I will live with it until God calls me home! Oh yes. The heavy drainage causes me to go into asthma cough attacks, sometimes pretty bad. I use albuterol and Symbicort but it only helps but not cure. I also strangle on my food, even when taking tiny bites! I chew my food forever, or so it seems, before swallowing! I consider myself a "slow eater."

1 ReactionHello fellow overactive phlegm production sufferers! These all sound so achingly familiar to me. Been at least a decade for me with the chronic cough and throat clearing. What started as a GERD diagnosis has now morphed (via self-diagnosis through research) into LPR or laryngopharyngo (sp?) reflux. And finally there is more info out there on it. No solution yet but more hope there will be. Gaviscon Advance is my latest find for overnight cough.
I started off with acid reflux. Then I have been coughing and if I don’t cough in the morning, then I have horrible chest and back pain. Been to the ER, ENT, pulmonary doctor and nobody can figure out what it is. Now my voice is changing. I was coughing up green mucus for months and now it is clear. Any comments is greatly appreciated.

1 Reaction@tricia7 Did the Restore 180 help you, what were your results?
@coconpuff I’m still in the process. Restore 180 comes in three 2 Month Phases. (6 month program) I about ready to start month 5 (Phase 3) and hoping for good results. The first part of the program is designed to help calm the nervous system and straighten the body to prepare for Phase 3 supplements. I did experience some herxing and needed to stop for a couple of weeks though. I’m looking forward to starting Phase 3.
Since starting this program the congestion has actually improved a little. It’s still not great but I now have less pain and swelling coming from the gland in my neck and the postnasal drip isn’t as bad as it was. I will report back if this stuff really works and helps me get some life and energy back.
I recommend the Restore 180 program. The support has been really good and you also gain access to a lot of information through the program. The people who run the program seem to really care and so far my experience has been a positive one.
Lyme disease is a beast if it becomes chronic. It doesn’t give up easily.
@fever1 I use to take it everyday but thought they took off the market.. What brand are you taking?
@coconpuff
Hi!
I am so sorry to hear of your problems. You may have LPR which is silent reflux. I have similar symptoms and been to multiple ents and pulmonary doctors. Last Ent said I have non allergic rhinitis but also silent reflux and migraines. I am now taking nurtec for the migraines. Eameprazole for now for the Gerd. Went to a nutritionist and she is focusing on my gut health. Y putting me on magnesium and Mega prebiotic.
I hope this helps you 😊
