Does everyone breathe out into the nebulizer? Dumb question?

Posted by grammyvictoria @grammyvictoria, 2 days ago

Newbie (probably be a newbie for a long time) When nebulizing I always want to take lip off the nebulizer when I breathe out, so i'm not breathing into the neb, just breathing solution in on inbreath. Is this a dumb question? (instructions only say "breathe regularly)
thanks

I inhale through mouth and exhale through mouth.

I think you are just supposed to breath in and out normally via the nebulizer.

That's what I do...rightly or wrongly.

Good question!
When I use the aeroclipse with breath activated option I remove the nebulizer from my mouth after inhaling and exhale through my mouth. With the parí eflow I keep my mouth on the nebulizer and exhale through the nose. That way I don’t lose so much saline to the air.

Interesting discussion, I always wondered what we are supposed to do? Like many of you I mouth breathing in and out through the nebulizer. There might be some difference about how efficiently we get the saline into our lungs by the way we are doing.

With Arikayce, the instruction for the nebulizer is specifically to breath in and out through the mouth. You may want to check the instructions for your specific nebulizer.

Yes, the videos showing the eRapid say to do this.
But I don't, because I just can't abide all that salt going into the air and making my air purifiers go wrrrrrrrr. I want it to go into my lungs.
I would love to talk to a specialist familiar with the eRapid about the way I am nebbing. I have certainly heard on expert webinars that it's good to breathe in deeply, hold the breath, and get as much salt mist into the lungs as possible, and sometimes to do 2 saline vial's worth instead of just 1. So I figure I'm getting more of the vial into my lungs that otherwise. But I am also not strictly following the official directions.

I do nebbing attached to my Aerobika device so you have to breathe out through it . Frequent sterilisation of your equipment is key. Good luck to you

@grammyvictoria I think that is a great question! I use the Aeroclipse which has a valve on the bottom of the mouth piece so when I exhale my breath goes out through the valve and not back into the nebulizer. I'm not sure if they all have that feature, but I would think so. Also, I use the breath actuator setting so the saline (or whatever you may be nebulizing) is only released when I breath in. I am not wasting saline when I have to cough or remove my mouth from the mouthpiece for whatever reason. I also find it easier to tolerate the 7% saline since it's not constantly pouring out.

@mjb24 I breathe in and out of nebulizing equipment through the mouth only. Is this correct? Or do I only breathe in bringing in sodium and out through nose . Please advise

That’s why we ALL need training on how to use the equipment. Different people need different approaches. I nebulize 7% saline with aerobika while wearing the compression vest. In and out thru the mouth with resistance on both inhale and exhale 20 minutes twice a day but that was the protocol for me. Sadly we are often just given equipment but no instruction and since it doesn’t seem to work, we just stop using it.

@smtdoc yes assigned equipment no instructions. Pulmonologist brushed questions away like annoyances. Bless this group for existing.

Wow. How many inhales do you get? That's a lot of pausing. I pause when I need to cough/clear during nebulization. I wonder how many pause/pushes that black button is good for.

@scoop Thank you. no Pause on my omRon no buttons on the bottom. Just on or off. Awkward when trying to spit it out or get a sputum sample.
