Pain in right side of torso

Posted by kiki03 @kiki03, May 4 6:21am

I’m experiencing intermittent dull pain which feels like it’s an organ area on the right side of torso on the back side. I woke up yesterday with severe lower back pain that was radiating around my hips to the front. Sitting down gave me relief but walking caused additional pain. The dull pain on right side felt stronger in pain as well. I ended up in ER where I had a contrast CT scan, blood, and urine tested. Now I feel crazy, as everything came back in normal range. I do not know what to do. Something is just not right. Any ideas? Thank you so much

A friend of mine had the same thing you described, they found issue with his sacrum, and had to have an MRI and EMG test to pinpoint the problem.

You need to go to an Orthopedic doctor and get an MRI.

I have Chronic Myofascial Pain and it behaves that way. It is similar to Fibromyalgia but without the terrible fatigue. I go to a pain specialist and take Lyrica for the nerve pain and Celebrex for the general inflammation and have gotten some relief. PT helps but the most effective is aquatherapy in a warm pool. Land PT did little good. A rheumatologist exam agreed with what my pain specialist thought.

I got some relief from my painphysioterapeut. Perhaps it is worth of trying?

@kiki03 Good morning, I have been dealing with multiple issues with my back (spine) and my right Flank/Oblique muscles. This started almost 3 years ago (July 2023), when I had a severe sharp pain in my low right back that started one morning with no accident or injury involved.

My wife drove me to the ER, they ran a CT scan for my abdomen and pelvis, did blood and urine tests, and everything checked normal. Unfortunately, I was sent home with the same pain I showed up with, and I have been dealing with multiple hospitals and doctors ever since.

Fast forward to last year (November 2025) and one of the problems was finally found to be with the disc between L5 and S1 (very bottom disc in the spine). It had collapsed on the right side, and I had a Lumbar Spinal Fusion at L5-S1 in November. Every other time I had imaging performed, the doctors told me they didn't see anything that would cause my pain.

Unfortunately, it is 6 months post-op, and my right flank/oblique muscles are constantly locked, causing pain from when I get up until I go to bed, every day, all day. I have had MORE imaging done, a CT of my Thoracic and Lumbar areas, and there is nothing my surgeon sees with my spine that will require surgery. But he and my primary doctor are still trying to figure what is going on with my locked muscles.

One thing they are looking at is called a Neuroma, which is damaged nerves that ball up and cause a pain point. I saw my surgeon last week, and as he pressed along the muscles of my right flank/oblique area, there is a spot directly over my right hip that hurts when it is pressed on. I am now waiting for the insurance to approve a nerve block (a shot in the damaged area). If it is Neuroma, this nerve block will cut the pain the same day, and we will know that is the problem. Another unfortunate thing is this could require another surgery, but I will have to do it to get rid of three years of constant pain.

I have had more imaging done in the past three years than most will have in their lifetime. The majority of the images (X-rays, Ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs) did not show anything, according to the many doctors I saw. All blood and urine tests were normal, as well, and it made it seem as if I was looking for something that wasn't there. But there is definitely something there. I am currently in Physical Therapy, and the two therapists I am working with both feel the locked muscles in my right side. They know there is an issue, but like with the 30+ doctors I've seen, they cannot tell me why the muscles are locked, and more importantly, how can I get them unlocked?

Don't give up. You have to be your own advocate for your health, because unfortunately, most doctors will not be. I've been to 5 hospitals, I have seen 30+ medical professionals, and the majority of the time I have not been treated well by those involved in my care. But as the saying goes, "The Squeaky Wheel Gets the Grease", so do not give up. Do as much research as you can online, get on message boards like this one, write to as many medical professionals as you can, keep reading and watching videos...it is the only way you will get the care you need...unless you are wealthy, then they'll have you fixed in no time.
