New to neuropathy, excruciating pain and days of sleepless nights..
My husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a little more than a year ago. He had been complaining of not feeling well and that his feet were hurting but we attributed it to working in a warehouse on concrete floors. It was not until is A1C came back at 12.5 and glucose at 322 did we realize we had a big problem on our hands. I will say since he started Metformin and changed his diet his A1C has dropped significantly however the neuropathy that he is experiencing has caused him to not be able to sleep and almost function from the pain. We have tried everything to help manage that pain and to help him sleep. He has even tried taking 2 Ambiens at night and that does not even come close to helping him sleep. Our medicine cabinet is full of every prescription, over the counter pill, creams, you name it and I have bought it. Nothing is helping and I feel it is only getting worse. I am looking for some help, advice, guidance, anything as we navigate through this new way of living. There is nothing worse than seeing the one you love the most be in so much excruciating pain and there is nothing you can do about it. This is no way for any person to live and we are looking for anything information that anyone here can provide to us to help us.

What medicine is he taking?

Don't know about ice but do it in my gym which is blessed with a cold water plunge , not ice pool, and do get relief. Not diabetic either, but copious amonts of red wine over decades ...my fault!

My daughter has lymphedema, I found herbs to aide, they work slowly, she takes 2 drops daily...a month now and a slim change so far but we are hopeful, instead of fighting outside fight within!. I have type 2 Diabetes and found a combo of herbs that help and so do some research as you know all our meds stem from mostly plants in the beginning anyway ~ Hope that helps.
Burning feet and legs destroyed my sleep. I tried gabapentin. I had some relief from pain, but still had pain with high dose. I, also, felt hungover. I couldn't drive. The doctor switched me to Lyrica, and now I sleep through the night. Less pain - no hangover. I still have discomfort, but I can sleep and drive. Walking during the day helps - even just one mile. Of course, work with your doctor for med fine-tuning. Your mileage may vary. Best wishes. I am thankful that my body got me this far every day.
I have idiopathic small fiber neuropathy (not diabetic, but intense burning, cramping, stabbing pains). After months of not sleeping, what helped me was taking amitriptyline at night. I took 10 mg. for 3 nights, then 20 for 3 nights, and then 30 mg. I also took high dose of gabapentin but tapered down after 6 months, but continued the amitriptyline for sleep. I hope you can find something that works for sleep. The side effects tend to lessen, but the main one is dry mouth. I kept water next to my bed.

1 ReactionI bet he is very B12 deficient. Stop alcohol and take B12 supplement. METHYLCOBALAMIN.
@gfred40 Very low vitamin B12 causes feet pain. Nerves have lost their protecting insulation. Electric wires are problematic when they loose insulation too. Just take the B12 supplement METHYLCOBALAMIN. Better still, eat mussels a lot. They are high in iron and B12. Alcohol reduces absorbtion. It numbs intestine villi.
Go for it now.
Take LDN- LOW DOSE NALTREXONE. Discussed here many times. Works for pain not numbness.

So sorry to hear what you’re going through, neuropathy changes your life. I had horrible pain in the beginning, nothing helped the pain. I found some THC lotion that really helped, as that wore off I experimented with THC gummies. They completely took the pain away for several hours. I only ate about 1/4 of one and now occasionally need one and eat @1/3 of one. Start small, if you eat too much you will get stoned, making it dangerous to get around. I hope it gives him the same relief I got. Living with that pain is miserable. There is also a magnesium lotion available on Amazon that I have found to help with some pains. Good luck.
