Gout Diet

Posted by cwal @cwal, Jul 22, 2025

My husband has had a gout flare. I've been researching Gout and dietary restrictions. It seems there is a lot of conflicting information regarding vegetables. Does anyone have a definitive list from a reliable source regarding vegetables?

Does anyone know anything about pseudo gout which attacks joints and is very painful
It is due to rounded crystals different from the crystals of gout which attacks the feet

@lilliehord I would be interested to know as well.

Thanks for all the thoughtful comments and suggestions. After much searching I finally found a list that should prove helpful. I will post here in case it should prove helpful for someone else.

@cwal If you remember where you found the list, please share the source of information. Thanks. FYI, I haven't found any two lists that agree. Even my doctor has disagreed. For example, he says no almonds.

Sorry, I was just searching on the web for info and found lots of lists and of course lots of conflicting information regarding what foods to avoid. I think most agree about the basics though of avoiding red meat, alcohol and organ meats.

I have both gout and pseudogout. The latter was found and went undiagnosed for about two years after the gout diagnosis. A Dual Scan CT revealed pseudogout scattered throughout my pelvis and turned out to be responsible for the difficulty I was having recovering from bilateral total hip replacement--I was unable to do the PT exercises that started at the hospital on the day after surgery. I do wonder if I also had pseudogout in my hip joints. We'll never know.

I accidentally discovered that colchicine relieves both gout pain and pseudogout pain when I had my second ever gout flare in a toe. The pain in the toe decreased within hours of taking colchicine but to my surprise (and joy) my hip pain went away later in the day. I am finally making progress on the hip exercises and was able to walk three miles for the first time since 2022. (I had been limited to about a half mile.)

Unfortunately, allopurinol has not been found to lessen gout. No pseudogout cure is currently known.

I'm not sure what you mean by "allopurinol has not been found to lessen gout". My husband has not had a gout flare (knock on wood) since he started taking it almost a year ago.

yeah, that made no sense to me either. Allopurinol is the gold standard for several generations for gout. It is possible you are talking about your own experience and you didn't have gout - and you meant "pseudogout."
Here's the comparison:
Gout: crystals: Monosodium Urate, starts middle aged, caused by high uric acid (tested by blood or urine), hereditary (you will have family members with it), resolved by LOW PURINE DIET (dietary relationship), resolved with gout MEDICATION, for sure determined by your uric acid level being high or having your joint aspirated, bigger joints in body triggered (like big toe in flares)
Psuedogout: crystals: Calcium Pyrophosphate, trigger area knee, wrist, shoulder, effects older people, NOT DIETARY RELATED - so changing your diet does not help; Xrays show calcification of joint cartilage and treated with Colchicine;
Colchicine has some toxicity associated with it. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK431102/
My suggestion is natural home remedy (flushing with 2 -3 tblssp. lemon juice, 2 tblsp. apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup tart black cherry juice (Knudsen) + 24 oz (7 up or water) - then flushing with water over the day. I haven't had a gout flare realized in 22 years!
I have been on a LOW PURINE DIET for 25 years. I started at 42 and I am 69. Vegetables aren't a big deal. What IS a big deal is red meat, beer, red wine, mushrooms, and foods which move your body to a high uric acid level. That is when the inflammation and flares start. Get tested (blood test is easy). That was how I was diagnosed finally. I don't know why they shy away from aspirating your joints. I should have been on the allopurinol years and years ago. I feel like I am 30 again. They diagnosed me with "pseudogout" 25 years ago but they neither aspirated my joints nor took a simple blood test and I suffered with whole body inflammation for all of those years.
A lady here in the forum turned me on to Zazzee and in 24 hours my hands no longer ached - AFTER 30 YEARS!!! https://a.co/d/051dmYcl
So I took a blood test and my uric acid was high so I asked for the Allopurinol and IT WAS A GAME CHANGER.
From the Arthritis Foundation:
https://www.arthritis.org/diseases/more-about/gout-or-pseudogout
Here are foods (almonds has nothing to do with this - I have a university nutrition background)
Key Acid-Forming Foods (High PRAL):
Animal Protein: Red meat, pork, veal, bacon, poultry, and fish/seafood.
Dairy & Eggs: Cheese (especially hard cheeses), milk, and butter.Processed
Grains: White bread, crackers, processed cereals, pasta, and rice.
Beverages: Soda (high in phosphoric acid), beer, and alcohol.
Other: Table sugar, peanuts, artificial sweeteners, and processed, high-sodium foods.
Foods with Naturally High Acid Content (Low pH) WHAT TO EAT - as they move your body to low acid:
Citrus Fruits: Lemons, limes, grapefruits, and oranges.
Other Fruits: Grapes, plums, pomegranates, and blueberries.
Tomato Products: Marinara sauce, ketchup, and tomato juice.
Pickled Foods: Sauerkraut, olives, and items in vinegar.
Tips for Managing Acid Intake: BALANCE:
Pair acid-forming foods (meat/grains) with alkaline foods like leafy greens, broccoli, and root vegetables.
GERD/Reflux: If experiencing heartburn, avoid citrus, tomatoes, caffeine, chocolate, and fried foods, as they relax the esophageal sphincter and allow acid reflux.
Alternatives: Choose low-fat dairy, herbal tea instead of coffee, and smaller, more frequent meals.

Sorry that was a typo.
