New to neuropathy, excruciating pain and days of sleepless nights..

Posted by erinhenschen @erinhenschen, May 1 8:48pm

My husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a little more than a year ago. He had been complaining of not feeling well and that his feet were hurting but we attributed it to working in a warehouse on concrete floors. It was not until is A1C came back at 12.5 and glucose at 322 did we realize we had a big problem on our hands. I will say since he started Metformin and changed his diet his A1C has dropped significantly however the neuropathy that he is experiencing has caused him to not be able to sleep and almost function from the pain. We have tried everything to help manage that pain and to help him sleep. He has even tried taking 2 Ambiens at night and that does not even come close to helping him sleep. Our medicine cabinet is full of every prescription, over the counter pill, creams, you name it and I have bought it. Nothing is helping and I feel it is only getting worse. I am looking for some help, advice, guidance, anything as we navigate through this new way of living. There is nothing worse than seeing the one you love the most be in so much excruciating pain and there is nothing you can do about it. This is no way for any person to live and we are looking for anything information that anyone here can provide to us to help us.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's condition. I am a type 2 diabetic but have only mild neuropathy.

Your husband may be taking or tried some of the following which have been effective for me.
For diabetes: mounjaro, Jardiance and metformin.
For neuropathy: gabapentin, R alpha lipoic acid, methylcobalamin vitamin b12, magnesium citrate.

I wish you the best and pray for you both.

I have peripheral neuropathy (unknown type, but not diabetic. My neurologist has tried every blood test available, and they all came back normal.)
I guess that is good, but the pain and burning in my feet never stops. I'm trying Lyrica (pregabalen) now, but with no results so far. I'm awake most of the night because of the burning. I soak my feet in ice water (doing so as I write this) then when they feel numb from freezing, I go to bed and get from 15 minutes to an hour and a half sleep before I do it again. Probably very bad for my feet, but it's the only relief I have.

@erinhenschen, I think nighttime is the worse for a lot of folks with neuropathy. Hoping your husband is able to find some relief soon. Here are a few related discussions you might find helpful:

@erinhenschen I suggest that your husband look into a pain pump. I t was originally designed for patients with pain from chemotherapy. However, more recently, it can help with the symptoms of neuropathy. The trial by injection is non-invasive. If morphine does not work, hydromorphone is tested. I had great success with the trial but not so much with the permanant implant. I believe that it may be a good option.

If you have a recliner in your home have him try sleeping in it with his feet dangling past the edge of the chair. I've had neuropathy for over 10 years now, and sleeping in a bed with just the pressure of the sheet and blanket, especially when they're tucked in was enough to stop me from sleeping. I've had to sleep in a special chair this whole time, and it sucks not being able to sleep in the same bed with my wife anymore, but you do what you have to in order to sleep soundly.

Sorry to hear the situation. Have you consulted a top neurologist specialized in peripheral neuropathy?

@antoniodoria 600 mg stabilized R-Alpha Lipoic Acid and 900 mg Gabapentin per day should provide relief. Please consult the best specialist neurologist in your area ASAP. God bless you and your husband.
