May I ask what brought you to the forum today? Were you or someone you know diagnosed with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) or other type of blood cancer or condition?

I had surgery on my right carotid. Hematologist told me my platelets had to be in the 400' s before I could have it. The day of my surgery they were in the 400's. They gave me a bolas of heparin then a heparin drip. I was fine

I was told I needed a platelet transfusion prior to surgery. My platelets are below 50. Anyone else familiar with this?

Hi @sharonm2024 When platelets are at a lower than normal level, the surgeon may order a platelet transfusion prior to surgery to avoid excessive bleeding.
Normal levels are generally considered between 150,000 to 450,000 per microliter. With your platelet count below 50 (50,000) your surgeon is just making sure there are no bleeding complications. It’s not unusual to have a platelet transfusion in this situation.

Thanks for the information. Going for a consultation first and then a check with insurance. Probably not until June.

Hi there my gorgeous ladies. All went well with surgery. Bit sore but that will subside in a few days. Can't keep us old ducks down. 😀
