Vitamin Supplements and Parkinson

Posted by Starbright @gulfer, Jul 13, 2017

Hi everyone! İ bought some vitamins for my mom like COQ10, B12, C, E, B12, Ginko, K2. İ was wondering how much vitamins should she get in a day.(besides her medicine) Because that is a lot of vitamins and just wondering how can she benefit most. She has early stage Parkinson.Thank you!-Gulfer.

Hello again @gulfer While I'm not a big supplement user I do use a few (fish oil, B12, B1, magnesium, Vitamin D3) There are some side-effects related to Ginkgo, see the MD website regarding these, http://wb.md/2udhIaj. Also, Vitamin D3 has some benefits for bone strengthening (if you live in a sunny climate, this might not be as important) see http://bit.ly/2tQ2s0q. Perhaps others in our group will have some additional suggestions, @chrisj2491 @denie57 @johnjames @trouble4343 @ggopher @tntredhead @aperob @caryp43 @burgle @macbeth @knightkris @mariemarie @pjsammy @techi @sandycerem @bobbieingeorgia.

Thank you SO much Teresa! She actually has type 2 diabets, so when İ read the side effects of Ginko, it is intteracting with diabetes medicines.İ can't thank you enough for showing me these websites. İ will check all the vitamins before İ send them to my mom. And for the sun exposure, From the article, sun exposure is highly recommended for body's natural vitamin D production to fight or even prevent PD. Thank you!!!You are very helpful.

@gulfer I'm pleased that I could pass on some helpful information. When considering supplements it is always good to think about the other health problems that exist and then to check your mom's current meds against the supplements. Regarding the Vitamin D (and calcium) they both help to keep bones stronger, which is important with PD because of the tendency for falls and breaking bones. Have you checked with your mom's doctor regarding appropriate supplements for her situation? Teresa

@hopeful33250 I did not have any chance to talk to my mom's doctor yet. She lives overseas, and I live in US. I am talking to her everyday. She says usually doctors don't like extra vitamins or supplements other than medicine in her country. She has a follow up within this month and she will ask then. By the time I send them, she will hopefully ask him. She is looking for a good psychiatrist at the moment, because she is feeling little depressed and she has been using Zoloft and Decirel

@gulfer I didn't realize that she was out of the country - that does make things difficult for you in your attempts to help her. Please read the discussions about moods and PD, they might help you in understanding what she is experiencing? Does anyone else in your family have PD? Teresa

@hopeful33250 As far as İ know we don't have any Parkinson in our family. My mom also do have brothers but they don't have Parkinson. Do you or does anybody have Parkinson in your family? Thank you so much for the support that you provide everyday!!-Gulfer.

@gulfer No, I'm in the same situation - no others with PD in my family. I have known of persons through PD support groups who have had other family members with PD. They did some genetic testing and discovered they had a gene that made them more likely to get PD. Support groups are great places for patients and/or family members with PD to learn about the disorder. Have you looked into joining a PD support group near your home? Teresa

@hopeful33250 I did not find a support PD group here. Pexola is helping a lot for her depression, that is what she says.

@gulfer I'm glad to hear that she is doing better with the medication. I'm not sure where you live, however, you can check out support groups in your geographical area at this website, http://www.parkinson.org/get-involved/chapter-network. Since your mom lives a distance from you this might be helpful to meet with others who are dealing with this disorder. Caregivers usually attend these meetings as well. Teresa
