@oregongirl It is not necessary for a living donor to be related. Our BIL was not. And blood type is a moot point, with cross-matching.

Do you have any percentages of how many take and last for a few years?

I’m on the transplant list. My direct donors have been eliminated. My nephew who is “A” will do a paired donation as I am “O”. How long did your crossmatching take?

@dshaver, There is currently a very active conversation happening with living kidney donors and in the transplant discussion "Living Donation:". Here is the link to that discussion. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/living-donor/

Deshaver. I still have time to stop the progression of my kidney failure. Unless they are just being nice. My new diet starts tomorrow. I would probably turn down transplant as I am soon to be 76

Remember it's not just a "new diet" it is a new life-style.mlmcg

No salt..I am looking at recipes on line that would be good for me. I am a vegetarian so I really have to look for some good recipes.

I found some good recipes over 10 years ago on-line so there should be plenty now. Is that no added salt or no salt at all, because that maybe hard? I am on a low salt diet and could have been what was meant? There are some good spices that can be used in place of salt. If you have not talked with a Registered Dietitian you may want to. Good luck. mlmcg

@mlmcg, I like that term, "new life-style"!

Yes we will beat cancer. I cannot thank all of you enough. My Lord knew you meant what you asked for on my behalf. I think as seniors we are conflicted. We don't want memory loss so we pray please Lord keep my memory. Personally, I cannot think of any thing worse than alzheimers.

I was told that being old it is common to have Kidney issues. I find that hard believe. I have my own opinion how my surgery caused my issue. If I am going to need a transplant, if I am going to go thru the surgery, I want it done t Mayo in Minnesota. Can you give me any stats on Mayo,s success?
