Looking for what to expect as I consider Kidney Transplant

Posted by Sevkira @sevkira, Jul 11, 2017

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can give me more info on what to ask the transplant team when I go for my evaluation. I'm struggling with whether dialysis is better or a transplant. I know any surgey has risks.

@oregongirl It is not necessary for a living donor to be related. Our BIL was not. And blood type is a moot point, with cross-matching.

@dshaver, There is currently a very active conversation happening with living kidney donors and in the transplant discussion "Living Donation:". Here is the link to that discussion. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/living-donor/

Deshaver. I still have time to stop the progression of my kidney failure. Unless they are just being nice. My new diet starts tomorrow. I would probably turn down transplant as I am soon to be 76

I found some good recipes over 10 years ago on-line so there should be plenty now. Is that no added salt or no salt at all, because that maybe hard? I am on a low salt diet and could have been what was meant? There are some good spices that can be used in place of salt. If you have not talked with a Registered Dietitian you may want to. Good luck. mlmcg

Yes we will beat cancer. I cannot thank all of you enough. My Lord knew you meant what you asked for on my behalf. I think as seniors we are conflicted. We don't want memory loss so we pray please Lord keep my memory. Personally, I cannot think of any thing worse than alzheimers.

I was told that being old it is common to have Kidney issues. I find that hard believe. I have my own opinion how my surgery caused my issue. If I am going to need a transplant, if I am going to go thru the surgery, I want it done t Mayo in Minnesota. Can you give me any stats on Mayo,s success?

@oregongirl and @mimcg. My fault for not being clearer. I was agreeing with @mimcg, who is inspiring in having overcome her problems (30-something years ago, now), but what I wrote was to encourage @oregongirl who spoke of having RA. Assumed she meant rheumatoid arthritis. I considered getting a walker - one of these days, I shall fall for sure cause my balance isn't so hot!!

If the med continues to make me sick As it does, I may have to give in to the pain and stop the med. I came very close to addiction to pain pills. I will not allow that into my life. It is hard when you have pain. Our pharmacy here has a capsule made from marijuana. Drs prescription needed. I assure you no addiction.
