Arthritis in the fingers

Posted by dennismm @dennismm, 2 days ago

I have arthritis in the fingers of my right hand. Some fingers are even “slightly bent.”
How do I type on my iPhone when my fingers keep hitting incorrect keys? It takes me 10 minutes just to type a simple text! I can’t always use voice or an external key, so what’s next?

If you read my email you would have seen that my surroundings are usually too noisy to utilize voice dictation.

@dennismm well sorry I missed that! I’ll remember not to respond again…

No problem responding! If it sounded like a negative comment I certainly didn’t intend it to be! I appreciate all the feedback!!

@dennismm Simple is always best! My fingers are ugly t look at, with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as having taken many years of abuse with torn tendons, fractures, etc.
I use daily hand exercises to keep them as flexible as possible. These only takes a few minutes, while you are waiting for coffee to brew, sitting in traffic, etc.

Here are some simple exercises from Mayo Clinic, you can find many others with a Google search:

I spent 45 minutes on the phone with an Apple Senior Advisor.
At the conclusion of our lengthy call he acknowledged that there is not enough screen space to utilize a larger keyboard, however he will make a suggestion to Apple to see if there is any solution.

@sueinmn I have the ugly fingers, too. Thank you for that link with the hand exercises (now I remember doing them decades ago and will start up again).

ya, i use a computer with a keyboard that's 'ergonomic' (sp) have bad arthritis and bent index fingers. I seldom use a cell phone as they irritate not just my fingers! Yes, epsom salts in hot water and chinese finger exercises (i'm a tai chi teacher) thanks.

The index finger of each of my hands is so badly bend (inward toward the other fingers) that typing on a cell phone is very difficult. I don't know of any way to make the keyboard larger or to straighten out our fingers. I think we're stuck with what we've got. One thought: use an iPad rather than a cell phone; they come in various sizes.

@joanland

In settings under “messages” there is an option to use a full keyboard instead of the keyboard on your phone. It’s under “hardware Keyboards.” It would only be convenient when you are home, but maybe there’s some kind of adaptive blue tooth key board you can find. I have a separate keyboard for my iPad and my iPhone, thought I don’t use it.
