How long after stop Tymlos to start another drug w/o losing gains?

Posted by hopeandhope @hopeandhope, 2 days ago

Hi! I have a quick question. I just stopped Tymlos today and need to start a bisphosphonate to lock in the gains. Does anyone know how long before we start losing gains? I don't want to wait too long. Is it important to start the next day after stopping Tymlos?
Thanks for any insight. I always find this group so helpful and informative!

@hopeandhope I am testing that theory out right now. I stopped Tymlos in January after two years. I'm now on the weekly alendronate pill.

I will have a blood test soon to check my bone markers, and I'm sure I'll do it again at six months. Next January will be the DEXA.

The plan is to stop all medication at that point, and then monitor. The doctor said I might have a little dip in bone density, but given that Tymlos brought me from -3.3 to -1.7, I've got some wiggle room.

I get plenty of the proper exercise, so I'm hopeful. We will see...

@njx58 It's my plan too! Cross fingers. You had great results from Tymlos! Congrats! Has alendronate worked well for you so far?

@chrisdietrich Sure! My Dexa was 12 months after starting Tymlos and 15 months after my previous Dexa. My spine improved 15% (going from osteoporosis to osteopenia) while my femoral neck and hip declined slightly but still osteopenia. My next Dexa is a year after I start alendronate. BTW, my osteoporosis is from idiopathic hypercalciuria which is controlled through meds for the most part.

@hopeandhope I don't have any side effects from taking it, and I feel fine. I assume my bone density is stable. I go to the gym 2x a week and I run every other day. We'll see what the blood tests say. It will be interesting to see my DEXA in January (a year on alendronate), and then the one after that (a year on nothing.)
